I think the best deal on tools are buying used...but quality tools such as snap-on, their hand tools are pretty hard to wear out.  ;)

Funny thing about Princess....I bought a Mac Tools spring compressor, thought it would be a quality piece....my co-worker bought the same style from Princess....turns out my Mac tool is made in Taiwan...and looks identical to the Princess tool but at half the cost...I'm not impressed.

That's correct you really have to look close at the high end tools now too.

We've seen a few things like that at our dealership. I don't buy Snap On for my little bit of hobby work. Sometimes the guys in the shop see what I've bought for home and realize they got the same thing off one of the tool trucks for a lot more.

the tools dont make the mechanic work
the mechanic makes the tools work

i have more then my share of money tied up in tools ... but the best thing i did when i started in the trade
was buy 2nd hand tools out of the pennysaver/triad

i picked up a snap on toolbox full of name brand tools for $8000
had it appraised at just over $19,000 (for insurance purposes )
i still buy tools all the time , just depends on the need for the tools
- name brand for work
- off brand for home or light duty
and always shop the hell out of specialty tools

Hey speaking of my above answer, maybe we should have a "ripper" trip soon?... No?
