For the last 4 years (yes, sadly) I've been storing my 69' ragtop out in the winter weather. But not unprotected by any stretch. Having no garage, and not seeing one in the future, I've had to be content with a Costco tent. It works pretty well all things considered. I have some nice lights that I hook up inside in the summer, a great shed close by with 220, heat, comp air etc. Unfortunately the top must come off the Costco in the winter, not like you could work in the thing in winter anyway.
So to keep the car dry without a roof, I've been using this home made system. It's uses an inexpensive 15x20' Princess auto UV resistant tarp (lasts about 3 years, $24), combined with two pieces of 12'x2" ABS cut to equal 20', joined together as the backbone. 5 eyebolts with lengths of nylon rope to raise it using the tent frame. Pop bottles filled with water (freezing does not hurt them) with hook caps to pull the tarp down tight. In order to allow the bottles to hang free and the tarp to be low enough to cover, the car should be up in the air on stands. Also keep the underside free from any parts, tires etc. Let that air move freely.
The ends and sidewalls stay up on the shelter, so really no snow or rain makes it's way inside the open ends. The open ends also promote ventilation, it does not trap moisture and the pitch is steep enough that it sheds all snow. Any sharp edges on the car body are taped, the points and corners such as the widshield frame, frame rails etc. have folded rags taped to them to prevent them poking through the tarp. Cut the eybolt tarp holes with a hole punch. Push the eyebolts through small squares of innertube rubber to seal them from leaking.
In the spring, I simply roll it all up and tie it over to the side of the tent frame. Put the bottles away.
So... if without indoor storage for your snowbelt project (obviously not yet painted), and you have a Costco tent. I can say this cheap setup works well, and will keep everything nice and dry. And no worries of snow collapse!
