1970 GTO "humbler"

Learn something new everyday... one of 233 made before the option was discontinued...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2JACXH3HG8

A new and short-lived option for 1970 was the Vacuum Operated Exhaust (VOE), which was vacuum actuated via an underdash lever marked "EXHAUST."

Yep. Those were the days. Compared to the button-down, politically-correct days we're living in now, the '60s and early '70s were just like the Wild West when it came to cars and what you could order in them.

I know.........I was there. wink

Beautiful car with a very very cool and unique option. The owner seems very respectful with the car too. Thanks for posting this.

i love that!! I had cutouts for mine but dident end up doing it. Now that i might have to take the headers off i should try and make internal cutouts like that myself. I love the fact that it was an option and then discontinued, too bad though.

Apparently Pontiac tried to sneak that option out below the upper brass radar. Unfortunately that commercial was shown during the Super Bowl and someone in GM upper management saw it and pulled the plug on that option!

There was an article on this option in High Performance Pontiac within the last 18 months or so.

electric would be the way to go! when i had my sbc, it sounded just mean with open headers, i would have gotten into a lot of trouble with cutouts!! of course 3" exhaust isnt all the much better! i did take it through downtown with open headers after i did my bbc swap, it was deafening! i like having a car that makes harleys look!hahaha!!

Astro-Jet has them on his 396 Camaro too. They are a lot of fun!

My Dad talks of cutouts in the pre-header days of the early sixties, 1958 348 Tri Power Pontiacs, 1964 Dodge Polara 383s were the favorites. Uncap em out front of the local hot rod friendly garage and make a fast run to A&W five miles away.....could hear em let off the gas for a dip in the road about the four mile mark.
The three inch exhaust on my 1973 Z28 was plenty loud, especially in the fast lane up against the concrete barrier.....hmmm window up in a black car in 30 celcius....or deaf in the left ear......smile
