Finally -- shop heat.

A while ago, I had this stupid idea I could heat the new shop with an air-tight wood stove. 36' x 36' x 13' ceilings.

So, when I finally smartened up, here's what I went with.

Natural gas-fired radiant tube heater - 60,000 BTUs
Whisper quiet.

The next challenge is to get vapour barrier and insulation up there so I'm not heating the great outdoors. It's a long way up.

Nice. I love radiant heat. When I walk into my garage it feels like a nice summer day. If you went with spray insulation you wouldn't need vapor barrier and it has a higher R value than fibreglass batting.

I took your recommendation on radiant heating, Todd.

I have to vapour barrier because I'm drywalling the walls and ceiling. I probably will blow insulation in the attic.

Good choice Bob. I remember going into smaller arenas when the kids were smaller playing hockey and ringette and most of them had radiant heat. It was just like going on a tropical vacation when you stood below them, they sure can kick it out. Now just get those walls and ceilings gyproced off and you are in businsess.

If you use spray foam insulation you still won't need to use vapor barrier. In my opinion it's the way to go- it seals completely between the joists. You wont get nary a draft and any dampness.

Todd. Two questions:

Are you saying that I should install the drywall, without first installing vapour barrier, and then climb up through the attic access holes (that I plan) and just shoot spray foam insulation?

And, if so, are you suggesting that I spray the foam between the roof rafters, or between the joists above the ceiling drywall?

confuse

foam is expensive, but would have it advantages if you were insulating right against the roof sheathing (like in a cathedral or flat roof application). it offers no r-value benefit over batt or cellulose (just more r per thickness). you are better off to just poly/drywall and either lay-in batt or use blown in insulation (you may be able to rent a blower and do it yourself to cut costs). also dont forget that if you have eave vents to use insulation chutes or stops so you dont cover up your vents... my 2 cents...

the radiant heating system performs great! good choice!

I just did the shop heat thing as well, Nefvr had any heat for over 20 years, so basically would not go out there in winter, our's aren't bad compared to back east. Now have  a Enviro pellet stove, good for 2700 square feet. it's about 2 ft square and stands about 3 feet tall, put it on a t stat and it's warm when i go out there, LOL. what a nice concept, LOL. $250 bucks for a ton of pellets, should last me a winter I think. Will post a picture tomorrow. also just drywalled the ceiling, used vapour barrier and batt insulation. 11 foot ceilings, 27x24 shop.

I'd have the foam sprayed first between the joists and up the roof. Then you'd install the drywall. Foam is expensive but I feel it's worth the cost. Just ask Mike Holmes biggrin. He's a big fan of spray foam insulation.

My detached is fully insulated. Has two 5000 watt themostatically controlled electric heaters kept on low setting for 800 sq ft of floor space. I was in there today. You can work in shirt sleeves. My attached garage has an old huge cast iron radiator that came out of my father in law's kitchen. You can also work out there in shirt sleeves in the dead of winter.

interesting-a friend had that in his trim shop back in  the early 1990's-claimed he hated it-heat never got to the floor ( mostly up top) and when he opened the big door he'd lose everything-just his opinion and I guess using it commercially with that door opening much more often the results are obviously different.

Its for sure better heat than I have !
