Need purchase advice!!!!


hey, i have been following this site for awhile now and finally have something to add, really looking to draw on the experience of you guys and get some opinions on a car i'm looking to buy

have always loved the beaumont and really really looking to make a purchase.....  and as much as i loved wrenching in my younger days, today, i'm looking for a turn key buy.....  check this link out start throwing your views and comments down.....

If it is not a real 396, seems like alot of cash for someone elses build. Ask him if it is an original car. I doubt it though. As a gear drive was not an option. Maybe worth 12-15000 to me.

well its definally a 4 speed Sport Deluxe car so if its not a 396 its definitly a 327 car! (rare itself)
was the M20 available on the 283?




dont quote me but i believe only the L34 396 was available in 66?
and all the L34 cars show the L34 option on the tag? (as its a option on a 736 car)

so maybe a 327 4 speed car originally?

Just a inquiry on 68sd's comment about M20 not being available with a 283......it states in the 1966 Beaumont brochure that the four speed is available with any V-8. Is it there are none documented with 283 four speed or is there other information available?
Either way the four speed is plenty rare......

I was just going to ask the same thing.

It seems to me that the 66 Beaumont convert I used to fill up at the gas station (this is about 35 years ago though) was a 283. It was a factory 4 speed car, plain convert, bottom of the model line.

For sure in 67 there was 283 with M20. There was one here for years. 67 SD, 283 2 barrel 4 speed single exhaust!

i would have to ask you, is a 66 your favourite? if you were building one from scratch, would this be it? i think at that price you'd have to be convinced and in love with the car, the price is bit high in this market, but the west is staying strong on prices it seems... more pictures of condition would be nice, it should be very clean in and out...too bad he's missing the SD chrome on the car, but i'm sure his price is negotitiable if its the one you want!

if you are interested in other years, it would be worth making trip to see both cars and really comparing the condition and value... this one would leave you with some $$$ in your pocket!

That's a lot of cash. How nice is the body? I think it's priced too high, but I'm not a Beaumont expert. 427 Carl's old 396 SD convertible is a more valuable car that can be had for less,(even if it will need some work).

I would agree with that because of the car I remember, but with that said, we know the brochures have sometimes not been perfect either!

whoever thinks 28k is too much hasn't built a car lately...or ever. Several of us on this forum can tell you what it really costs. How much does it cost to build a 396 to that level these days? 6-7K? more?, the wheels and tires are worth 2k min (I don't think they suit the car), the interior is min 3k all in, paint..?and tons of other stuff as you know. Then what do you pay for a car to start with. I have a 66 with 427,m21,12bolt 4:10,new interior,chrome, reasonable paint, no rust, that I call a nice driver and I'm probably going to sell it. I won't take less than 24k, so I think this guy is right in line unless something is wrong with the car.
My advice is look at it, drive it, and if your still interested, make a reasonable offer.
I do agree with the all original one that the guy back east has is also a good investment, but needs rebuilding and will end up a $50k car in the end. (and worth it).

You raise a valid, and good point about building one. But the reality is or has been always for me that I get about .50 cents on the dollar when going to sell. Even less when the market is soft.

Disclaimer: Don't really know that much about Beaumonts except they are basically Chevelles with interior and trim differences.

I bought a 66 Chevelle SS396 new and owend it for over 20 years - if any Chevelle was an original 396 it had bulges on the hood, this one has none, therefore it is most likely a transplant (nothing wrong with that, unless you think you are getting an original 396 car).

Anyone who advertises an M-22 (a true racing close-ratio) is suspect, 95% of them are people using the buzz words and would not know a real M-22 if it bit them on the .... - others have noted from VIN plate that it was an M-20, which is the wide-ratio 4-speed usually used in moderate-power cars (my 325HP 66 SS396 came with it). M20 had 2.56 1st gear, M21 (and M22) had 2.20 1st gear. 

So I would be very suspicious of the sellers statements. If he will pull the side cover off the trans and send me a picture, I would be willing to eat my words if in fact the gears look like this

So that is the 'caveat emptor' about the supposed tranny.

Obviously the motor is not stock. Check the serial number on the block, does it match the VIN?

Check the rear end - does the differential have 10 bolts or 12 bolts? All big blocks had 12-bolt rear ends, it is extremetly unlikely that any small blocks did. If it is a 10-bolt rear end, the odds are 100 to 1 tht the car was not originally a big block car.

You probably could not buiild that car for what he is asking, but the real question is: do you want to buy someone else's car, built how he wanted it, and deal with all the things you discover you will want to change?

Also, not to rain on anyone's parade, but pulling off big overpriced rims and trying to sell them for what they cost originally --- you will be lucky if you can sell them at all. If you really want to buy the car, and prefer better-looking wheels (8" Corvette rallye wheels are HIGHLY recommended) ask him what he paid for the rims and tires, and tell him he can keep them and knock that amount off the price.

Most important: It is easy to buy, it is hard to sell. You (the buyer) are in control. You do not have to buy this car. It is easy to spend, it is hard to save. A motivated seller will be willing to take less - and you can use the 'saved' money to redo the car how YOU want. Be willing to walk away. "There are more fish in the sea."

So, you asked for opinions, those are (some of) mine. Either way, I hope you get the car you want!

The 66 Canadian big block Chevelles and Beaumonts did not come with the "SS" hood by all information available.

Seems like that only started in 67 for us from any info printed or otherwise.

Strange but true.....!
