Had plans for a nice turkey supper tonight with all the family but had decided to take an afternoon drive up to see the house we've been building. Took along our super little dog Taffy for a little fresh air and not long after we got there she tried to stop on the icy upper deck and went down about 30 ft. onto the frozen ground and rock. Was whining abit until we picked her up but was quiet all the way to the vets. We could tell she had a couple broken legs but couldn't tell how bad her chest was. Long story short vet found that her breathing was quite labored so that gave us some more concern. Gave us a starting estimate of $1750 to do xrays and tests and splint the legs so we had a family discussion there and decided to put her down. We knew someday it would happen just hoping not this soon but we comforted ourselves in thinking she never did have any pain in her life except for her final hour. We all took our turn holding her, shed some tears and said goodbye. Pretty tough. She went over right beside my youngest daughter so will be a tough memory for her but a few hours later I'm impressed how well everyone is coping. Besides the cost the biggest unknown was the internal injuries and plus the cost didn't include any surgery if required on her legs. Funny thing I commented on Kim's situation not even a week ago and as I walked her this morning I thought I sure hope we have you for a while yet but we never know what curves are thrown our way. I still believe God is in control. Anyway I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and hope your next year is the best ever.

Wow Jerel, I'm sorry to hear that. While it certainly is much different than a human life, it's a tough decision and certainly not the way anyone would ever want to spend Christmas day.
You are so right. We have no idea what's in store for us. And I'm glad we don't. God is absolute wisdom, far wiser than we can ever be.
I hope the rest of your Christmas season is a lot better.

sorry to hear of your loss, pets become a member of the family , its sad when you have to make a decision such as this, it was probably the best decision you could have made, the dog is now in a better place, and at peace
It's not your fault, those dogs can have the same injuries if you trip or step on them by accident. Focuss on the kids and there problems and it should be alright.
It is god's plan and it is not perfect. We have had two instances with our dog and both required surgery. I/we ended up paying for both and don't beliveve we would qualify for Pet insurance now after two surgeries. If I was getting a new pup today i would buy the pet insurance. Our first surgery was about $6000 and she was just a puppy. she could still function just with a ruptured disc and we wanted her to live a better life. A year latter another disc ruptured and same story too young to put away. This time she got around dragging her rear quarters and wearing a diaper for a year after the surgery. We made provisions in the house and off the deck for her to get outside on her own. After 14 mos or so she just started showing progress. Slowly she wouls raise her hips and stand. Today, 1 1/2 years later, she walks with a wobble in her hips but can get where she is going and doesn't seem to know the difference. Still friends with everyone. That 2nd surgery was $7,200 and it was a tough pill to swallow but we don't regret it. Both kids still made it through college.

Sorry to hear of you pet loss... Thats the second one We (CP) have had this Christmas... Thankfully we have, all, had a safe Chritsmas.... Pets bring us so much love...
Sad to here of your loss. It sure is a hard pill to swallow when we loose a loved one. I may sound silly but that is what they are(loved ones) To some people they are just dogs. Those people have never owned a dog or if they do they don't deserve it. Dogs know when you are down and they will sit with you all day to keep you company. When my brother had to put his dog down this last summer he put him in the back of his 66 GP and took him up town for 3 large soft ice creams.

Jerel, that is so sad to hear. Our thoughts are with you and your family. I know we have similar families, three children roughly the same ages.
We lost our middle Airedale Winny in a tragic incident in May. We kept second guessing ourselves about the circumstances but at the end of the day some things are out of our control. I believe you have done the right thing for your beloved pet and you can all take solace in the joy and happiness that this little friend brought the family.
Thanks for the comments guys, I appreciate it. Things are a whole lot better today and the house is pretty well back to normal. It's good to hear you're not the only one going through these things and each of you know exactly where a guy is at at that time. Thanks again.
I know how much pain you go thru losing a pet. Sorry for your loss. I picked up Presley's ashes today. Bought back the pain again, but he's finally home.
