Hit and Run Mentality

Gotta wonder what goes through a person's little brain when they back into your car and crush your door right in and then just drive off obviously not leaving any info.  I would at least like to be a short distance away and just see what their reaction is and how quick they peddle out of there.  Daughter had my wife's car parked at the local mall and returned to find that.  She specifically parked in the outside stall so had a lesser chance of door knicks but the lot changes direction and there are vehicles backing out from the end that come towards where she was parked.  Wife has a little Maxda 3 in perfect shape until now and it just bugs me to start repainting when you have nice original paint.  I realize it's a whole lot better now than it was a few years ago for matching up but I would for a minute like to just get into that idiot's head and see what he's thinking or maybe I wouldn't.  So I guess it's a $500 trip to the mall for the deductible.  They must be trying to make me forget about my dog.  There's all kinds out there.  Do you think that's the majority or the minority?

I would have to think majority.

We both work in a little town of 250 people, has one store, the local Co-op. Couple of years ago my wife comes out to find the quarter panel caved in on our Roadmaster. Pretty much everybody knows everybody in this town. Most people charge their groceries on an account. My wife was in 15 min max, so simple, look at who charged groceries after she got there, right? Nope, privacy laws, can't tell you who was here, so we get nailed deductible just like you.

On the other side of it, a few years ago we made a run from our cottage into Kenora, Ont Safeway for groceries. When we come out, a man about 65 or so is standing at our truck and when we walk up, asks if it's our truck. His shopping cart got away on the hill when he was unloading it and it bumped our truck. Very small ding and paint chip on a 10 year old truck. I told him how much I appreciated that he waited and told us, but said he was off the hook. I almost had to beat him up to make him get in his car and leave without paying us for the damage!

I go to get my son at school last spring-I always park in a spot then have to wait for all the bozos that block the road-this one time I'm a little late so I park on the far side of the road-leave it running with my wife and younger son in the van-I see the guy across back up but realize its too tight for his limited skill in driving-he waits then he backs again and hits the van-then pulls forward and backs and hits it again to sort of push it back ! ya-I was parked wrong-but come on ! I was coming-I seen it all-the van was running with a passenger who could have moved it if  asked-the kids go to the same school-what example is he giving the kids ! anyway my wife wrote down the plate number-I don't know him-so I had a police friend call him-he calls me leaving a message that he may have apparently hit my van-it was a rubber bumper cover pushed in so rather than dealing with the bozo-I fixed it-the guy calls again ! then I hear other parents suggesting it was my fault and wrong to call the police.

 Ya I was improperly parked.

Doesn't matter if you are parked on the lawn, there's still no reason to hit it.

Does that mean you can key someone's car if the meter is expired? Hardly.

friend of mine got hit in Mall lot last spring. Totaled the right frt. fender on his Ranger p/up. I replaced & painted new fender for him. 2 weeks later he comes out of his house to go to work in morning, somebody hit the left front fender while parked overnight, nobody in either case stayed around. Had to do the same job as the 1st time just different side, I'm getting good at taking fenders off Ford Ranger & painting them.

One time about 20 years ago I had this little ragged looking but extremely reliable 77 Toyota. I had parked it on the main downtown street across from the building where I worked. There was also a vacant spot behind me and it required parallel parking.

Just as I had crossed the street, I saw a big mid-80s Cadillac Fleetwood line up for the spot. The driver got into the space, pulled ahead and ran into the back of my car, then reversed and ran into the front of the car behind him. Basically used the two cars as bump stops for his incompetent driving.

The driver then climbed out, crossed the street where I was standing on the way to wherever he was going. I recognized him - because he was the mayor of the city. I spoke to him, saying that he just hit two cars, including mine. He didn't deny it, he just said that's what bumpers are for, and walked away.

I considered calling the cops, but you no damage was visible, and who would have believed me over him?

What got to me at the time was the arrogance of this guy. Due to his public behaviour in office I had little respect for him before this incident, and as you can imagine, none after. He was a guy who thought he was so important that he could do what he wanted. And in this case he did just that.

One in the morning I stop at the local Shoppers to run in and get Milk and Bread for breakfast. I park perfectly near the door, I'm the only car in the lot. Get milk and bread takes  4 minutes, come to Suburban and the rear passenger door is caved in, no one in sight.

To be honest parking lots are the worst place and since it is private property there is nothing the police can do. Might as well bolt if you do it to someone.

Then there's the urban legend about the fella who hits a car then leave a note on the hit vehicles windshield, presumebly a name and phone number. The note instead says "I'm leaving this note because there are witnesses who would give you my license number if I didn't. Good luck finding me..."

Last year I parked in a lot in my wifes 03 Accord during what was deemed to be a gale. I opened the door a crack and the wind literally sucked and took the door right out of my grip at 60mph...right into a brand new Toyota Sequoia parked to my left. My door hit the Toyota with such force that my door edge formed around the suv's large trim piece laving a perfect form of it. The Toyota had a huge welt. The Honda door was hurt.

For about .5 of a second my response was to flee... but then I remembered how much I HATE door dings. Anyways, I left a really detailed note under the wiper and waited for the call. It never came.

I actually saw the suv a few times in traffic..the big mark was the givaway. But because I stepped up and tried to make amends to that person, my conscience is pretty clear. I have zero tolerence for parking lot bandits, and I'll probably get in big trouble one day because of it.

I feel for you on this one. Such is driving in the jungle I guess, but If you're able to come clean when you cause damage..what else can you do?

Actually..It may have. I did make sure it was well placed.
I was sure it would hold. It was solid.

I once had found a note under the wiper on my 79' Impala. A fellow had apparently come into my door while pulling out at CT. The Impala was totaly rafty, a beater really (this was 1991), so it didn't matter..in fact I couldn't even find where he'd hit, lol!

I called to thank him. He was so relieved that I'd just laugh the whole thing off. What a man.

I have more of these kind of storys.

It's just another example of the breakdown in society.  Goes right back to the morals and ethics people teach their children.  The fact that this happens so often now says a lot about many peoples' commitment to parenting these days.

This has happened to me so many times over the years I have lost count.  I had the left front corner of my Camaro caved in a couple of years ago while parked on the street in front of my house.  It was probably my neighbour across the street but since I didn't see it happen, what can I do?  This is one instance where living in TO is like living in the jungle.  I've actually been sitting in the car listening to the radio when someone trying to parallel park in front or behind me just rammed right into the car.  The last time was some dolled up woman in her late 50's in a late model BMW.  I was noting her poor driving skills as she was trying to maneuver into the space behind just praying she could pull it off when WHAM!  I jumped right out and probably gave her the shock of her life.  When I said I wanted her information or I was calling the police, she quickly offered me $100.  Her wallet was full.  That hardly makes up for the ones who have gotten away with it.  You should see my front bumper, just full of deep gouges and scratches - these people all knew they had hit me.  Like Mark, those people better pray that I never catch any of them in the act of trying to get away...

i backed into a car that was parked opposite my driveway (i knew it was there but looked at a car comeing my way at the four way stop that nobody stops at) and smack!Pop! Hiss! I get out and i hit the rim with the corner of my bumper and broke the valvestem off! I wrote a note and went to 10 houses around me to find out who owned it and then about 3 hrs later i get the call. I come home and talk to her and she was so suprised that i even left a note! I put her spare on and told her to come back in a couple hours and i will have it fixed.

I buffed that chrome sooo shiney and went and got a new valvestem put in. I told her that i was a car guy and could never hit and run and when she pulled up for me to put it back on i told her to come in the other driveway(i have a corner house with two driveways) and she saw the 59 in the garage and said"i know that car, ive seen it at the car show around my house". Turns out she was here just lookin after her daughters kids that day.

Just after high school i was at the beach and was sitting in the car with a girlfriend when a guy in a bmw pulls up beside me. He gets out and hits my door with a cooler and dents it. He starts to walk away and i confront him (i was 18 and he was around 35) and he tells me who cares, its an old piece of ****. I said really, and punched his arogant ass in the face it sent him flying and said your an old piece of **** too, that means i get to hit you. He just got up and walked away he was so embarassed so then I pulled out and did a brake stand and whiped a pile of sand and rubber at his car!

Im really a nice guy though!!

It's comical Hillar, but when your in the passenger seat in your buddys big truck. And you get hit by a door opening in a dark parking lot, you might want to pick your fights. At least guage the situation.

I once stepped out into a huge...Hells Angel...yes! Hells Angel...full colours. He actually apologized to me for the door bump. I said nothing to him but gave him a "whatever" look. His ripper girlfriend scowled at me when she stepped out. My buddy came around and kept a good side on me. It defused thank you very much all the well but it rattled me.

Your story confirms that "car guys" will always go the extra mile to make things right. And see total red when people become total tools out on the road!

Thats it! "Car guys" don't flee!

What's comical is these people who think they can just walk away after giving you the proverbial finger.  It won't be long before they are out of sight and you can just do the long slow walk around their car with a key...

I'm not proud to say, but I've done back and forth custom sidepanel work. I used to be known for it. No more though. Age calms you somewhat.

I had a guy open his door so hard on my service van that the van swayed back and forth. I was eating my lunch in the van at a mall parking lot when it happened so I got out and had a look. I found the dint, looked at the guy, and he said and I quote, " what you are looking for is not there." He was super smug so I said what about the dint. He promptly told me to F**K O**. So I laid my knee into his door and said, " what you are looking for is not there." He raced off and I called my boss to ask him if I should report it and he said it's not worth the trouble. These are the people that hit and run, not us. A lower standard of people.

I went and answered the front door one day, there stood the biggest cop I had ever seen, asked him if I could help him, he said he was there to see my wife, with a ticket for hit and run in the mall , yup she would open her door and hit the next car, and walk into the mall

Bit this time a $175.00 ticket , you should have seen her trying to explain it to me after i called HEY HONEY SOMEONE AT THE DOOR TO SEE YOU

also we have lived kiddy corner to a school zone, for the past 30 years and oneday got a speeding ticket for doing 47kms in the school zone

About a year later I cut up her drivers licence and took her off the road, she's been off for about 7 years now...so I dont know how much thats saved me...priceless
