1949 Pontiac Chieftain Silver Streak

Hi all

I have just bought a 1949 Pontiac Chieftain Silver Streak . It is in real good shape and has never been restored . Has no rust and it's all there. 49000 actual miles . I just need to find out more about the history of these cars . Can anyone help ?

Welcome. I'm not the right guy but some one on here will be able to point you in the right direction. You may as well go get a picture of your cowl tag and post it and then the experts will be able to decode for you.

I found it in Centerville , Indiana. I was lucky . biggrin I didn't pay very much for it . The guy needed cash. Bad thing is I know the trunk is full of parts and it's still on the trailer and it's too cold to get into it right now .

Well, this is my first post on this forum. Leave it to me to resurrect an ancient thread. To the point...I am now the owner of the OP's car. I figured that I could fill in some of the unanswered questions about the car.

1949 Pontiac Silver Streak
4.1L Straight 8 (numbers matching)
Hydramatic transmission
Factory turn signals (someone had commented on them)

I stumbled onto this thread when Googling some stuff on the car. Imagine my shock to see that this was indeed the very same car that I have now.
The car runs and drives, but it sounds as if the engine is needing some attention. By the time I got the car it had been shot in black primer/sealer....including some of the trim. No problem though...I've been polishing my heart out to bring back the luster to all the stainless trim. The majority of the chrome needs to be redone. You just can't polish out pits.
The hubcaps shown in the OP's pics had been replaced with some "Salt Flat Racer" style caps. Not sure why, but it is what it is. The license plate lights were not there either.

I've found a lot of resources for parts over the past few weeks and hope to be able to pick everyone's brains here for other info.

Ahhhh...and here is a pic of the cowl tag.

Thanks. Once I heard it run I just had to have it! Traded my lowrider S10 for it. Somehow I feel like I got the better end of the deal.

And a side shot. The sun was coming in through the garage windows. Makes the "paint" look weird.

Welcome from Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada. Its good to see that someone has the car now and wants to bring it back to life. Great job on the stainless, its starting to look like new. this is an awesome place to get answers for any question that you have and lots of info already exists up in the Pre 58 section. Cheers.
