Boy was it cold today, must be an age thing as I sure feel the cold more now. Went shopping with the wife today and its a good thing my balls were in her purse to keep warm.

You and me both. The only reason I grumble about the cold is so others have company!

I found brass balls on my lawn, didn't know any of my neighbours had a monkey!!!
Freezing the Balls Off the Brass Monkey," a Navy Phrase about Cannon Balls-Fiction!
Summary of the eRumor This piece of alleged history explains that in the olden days of sailing ships, cannon balls were stacked on the decks on brass plates called "monkeys." The plates had indentions in them that held the balls on the bottoms of the stacks. Brass, however, expands and contracts with the temperature and if it got cold enough, the cannon balls could fall...giving real foundation to the phrase "cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey!"
The Truth According to the United States Navy Historical Center, this is a legend of the sea without historical justification. The center has researched this because of the questions it gets and says the term "brass monkey" and a vulgar reference to the effect of cold on the monkey's extremities, appears to have originated in the book "Before the Mast" by C.A. Abbey. It was said that it was so cold that it would "freeze the tail off a brass monkey." The Navy says there is no evidence that the phrase had anything to do with ships or ships with cannon balls.
Plus 4 and sunny here in St. John's NL today. All of the snow has disappeared except the parking lot piles. Feels more like spring than winter. But I know it's an illusion ...
Well I just went out to pick up a few things a the local Shopper's, temperature read out in the Deville showed -17, then I came home and walked the dogs, holy cow it was like walking two anchors, they couldn't care less, windy too. Came in and put on TV and lo and behold an Extreme Cold Warning has been issued.
FROM CBC NEWS:
The city of Toronto has issued an extreme cold weather alert, which gives the city's outreach workers access to extra support services in their effort to get homeless people off the street.
During the alert, in addition to extra effort to get people into emergency shelters and drop-in centres:
TTC tokens are made available at a number of drop-in centres so people have transportation to shelters.
More than 100 agencies are advised of the impending extreme weather, and reminded of the danger this poses to vulnerable individuals.
The city adds an extra 168 shelter spaces.
Shelters relax service restrictions.
Environment Canada said temperatures in the -16 C to -18 C range were combining with northerly winds of 20 km/h and higher to produce wind chills from -25 C to -29 C across the GTA Saturday morning. Temperatures were expected to climb to about -12 C by Saturday afternoon, but drop back down to -15 C, and -26 C with the wind chill.
A cold-weather alert is called when Environment Canada:
Predicts a temperature of -15 C or lower, without the wind chill.
Issues a wind chill warning for outdoor activity for people in the Toronto area.
Predicts extreme weather conditions, such as a blizzard, ice storm or sudden drops in temperature.
Every morning I have to enlarge the hole in our pond to let the gases from the fish escape. My "fish cam" is still working. You can see the fish moving ever so slowly with a "WTF?" look on their face!
And thats why its nice to be on the west coast. Spent 10 days in Maui just before xmas. 82 deg F. each day and no rain! Hmmm, better get the lawn mower tuned up soon.
We were chatting about the west coast one night over the holidays, Hillar was here for dinner. I have never been out but after hearing Hillar talk about it that's one trip Mary and I will have to make in the very near future. My boss lived there for a number of years as a young man then student at UBC, his brother stayed, he visits often and loves it too.
Everyone I know loves the west it seems. That's great, I'm happy for them. I have always been one who is content (well, of course during the flood last spring was an exception) with my situation. I guess the roots are too deep for me...
I was raised being taught that if the grass always looks greener on the other side, it's likely because it's well fertilized!!!
I am actually very thankful that so much of the positive of Northwest Ontario and the prairies is overshadowed by the perceived "negative" of our winters. It keeps the population in check and those of us here get to enjoy the beauty of it that much more.
