Carb knowledge requested?...

I'm looking for an original carb for my 66 327.  Although the parts books seem to indicate that the 327 could have come with either a Carter, Holley, or Rochester, the proper Rochester seems to be the #7026202.  I came across the following and am looking for some guidance as to whether or not this would be worth pursuing?
http://cgi.ebay.ca/1966-7026202-H5-Q-JET-CHEVELLE-NOVA-327-AT-CHEVY_W0QQitemZ260478239385QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item3ca5b68299

Thanks in advance...

Looks to be the correct carb for your app, can't quite make out the date code, will of course need a complete overhaul, hopefully the throttle shaft bushings are o.k. if not it needs to be sent out to be rebushinged, there are still a few places around doing this, price is not too bad for an original either, they say they can restore it also why not get a quote to do this and just have an original bolt on ready to go carb? he seems to have pretty decent feedback and looks trustworthy enough, I'd buy it!!

As a guess, most likely Rochester will be the right one for you.

I would expect a properly restored carb will likely end up being $400-$500 all said and done.

It seems to me some of the guys on here from Ontario had a place they were using and they were quite happy with the price and service. I just don't recall the details.

that 66 275 hp sd rag from conroy i was looking at had a rochester with the gas line coming into the carb from the passenger side, it looked like something you would see on a pontiac but it was oem, it wasnt a quadrajet for sure.

I believe every q-jet I have ever seen has the inlet on the rt side, makes sense since the pump is on the rt side as well and the fuel line runs straight up to the carb, not to mention the linkage is always on the left and would surely interfere

I'm not sure what other Rochester it would be. I didn't think A bodies had the old Rochester 4 jet in 66.

The Carter confuses people because they think of the older carter carbs but they are the same Rochester  Quads but made by Carter. Carter made the quad to keep up with the demand. They look the same but one says made by Carter. Some also say GM needed a secound source in case Rochester went on strike.

I want to disagree with you Ian. Hopefully we can still sit together at the next Manitoba CP coffee in spite of it!

I think the Carter in these years was like the pics below, I believe an AFB which is similar to the "Edelbrock" carb sold these days.  It seems to me the Carter Quadrajets came out in the 70's possibly.

I'm never too old to learn. I had no idea.

I know the 65 Carter was not a Qjet (or at least not all of them) because I have an original 65 300 horse 4 speed carb for my Acadian and it's a Carter AFB.

I should never say never. Until you say this, I had never heard of a Carter made Rochester in the 60's.

Do you think they said Rochester on them then, or Carter?

The ones in the 70's actually said Carter Quadrajet.

the first post of this thread shows a quad carb on another link, the carb that it shows is not the carb i seen on this 66 sd 275 hp that my friend got off the orig owner, the woman that owned the car only ever changed tune up parts plugs and points , it was a very odd carb not your run of the mill quadrajet , maybe it was a early or late production thing, i just called my buddy and he said it was a rochester of some sort.

Could be cheetah, probably looked like this rochester 4gc. They show this on the 283 for 65 and 66 and some 65 327's. When it comes to those transition years from 65 to early 66 I am sure there was some cary over.

for what it's worth, my buddies 66 GTO has a 4 jet, not a quadrajet.    Also, the 4 jets are not a spreadbore like the quadrajets are, and the throat diameter is smaller on the 4 jet.

I keep learning. I thought the GTO's all used Carters.

Back to school for this cowboy!

I probably said the wrong thing by saying the 66 GTO had a 4 jet.  It's probably a Carter, but is definately not a quadrajet.

My 63 Grand Prix 389 had a Carter 4 bbl carb, but it was not a quadrajet style. It looked more like the rochester 4GC type carb.
Assume the Rochester 4 jet is the 4GC carb as used for sure in 63-64 327 & 409 applications?

The 4GC was available in the US on the 220 horse 283 Nova, but not here that I've seen. I know a guy who runs the 4GC on a Super Stock car in NHRA. He's run the carb on a 283 and a 327 both in Super Stock.

Intersting how in the parts book it reads "Carter-Serviced by your Carter distributor", "Holley-Serviced by your Holley distributor", and "Rochester-Serviced by General Motors". What's with that?...

This link refers to the Carter 4028S (as mentioned in the parts book) as being for trucks?
