Yeah, I'm not a doubter but I'm still amazed at the wording of that and the fact that they say Carter made Rochester carbs. I can't figure out why Rochester would let them put "Rochester" on the carb if Carter made it.

 

The parts book has Holley parts listed in charts, but no charts for Carter.

really?? I have one of them I pulled off a wreck?? years back ? Now I have to pull it down and have a closer look.

Understood, but just wondering if there could have been a reason to put Carters specifically in the trucks and not the cars?

OK, now I'm looking at the "AMA Specifications-Passenger Car" documentation that I recieved from GM along with my build sheet. On page 9 "Engine- Exhaust Emission Control" it shows Rochester for the 327 and Holley for the 396. Then on the following page of "Carburetor Supplementary Info" it shows all three Rochester, Holley and Carters for the 327 (and Rochester and Holley for the 396.)

Would the manifold, which I know is original, provide any guidance?...

Well, the Canadian truck parts book says a 4 barrel in 66 or 67 was only on a 327 and was only a 4 jet.....

It sure must have been fun looking up carb kits in those days!

The Carter AVS and Holley use the same intake.

Qjet is on its own.

Yes, that will make it a "for sure" because I think we are safe in saying the Canadian cars never had a Holley in 66 on  275 horse, or are we.....................rofl.gif

Ahhh now these two posts are together...I'm interested in the intake part number and configuration too......BTW thanks for all the part number info Carl....I knew I should have bid on that parts book in the CP Auction a while back.....

It seems like the Rochesters were evolving into what is now commonly know as a Quadrajet.....before the name came into common use.

This seems to be the most confusing years for carbs yet for the same engine. 327 275 hp engine could be a Carter AVS our a Holley model 4160 on the same manifold or a Rochester made or Carter made Quadrajet or maybe even a Rochester 4GC. Its got my head spinning.

 It looks like the Holley 4150 came in either a "side inlet" ore an "end inlet".  (However, the book says the "side inlet" was only on the Acadian 350 hp 327 and the "end inlet" on the Pontiac 425 hp 427.)

3931575   1966/All First jobs with 327 - with Roch Carb /sup 3888887 - 3912102
3888886  1966/All After jobs with 327 - with Carter Carb
3888885  1966/All RHD with 327

If you search "acadian beaumont" on ebay someone has a Canadian Pontiac / Beaumont carb updates manual. It would probably shed some light on this topic if someone were interested enough to buy it?

I think untill you look at the one you have we are all guessing. Those intake numbers do not show up in the chevy by the numbers book. Numbers are totaly different in my book. But this is a USA based book. I know sometimes the casting number on the part is not the same as GM's part number.

Coming late to this party, my 73 had a Quadrajet by Carter. Looked the same in every respect as a Rochester. It needed a rebuild so I changed to a Edelbrock and sold the Carter Quadrajet to a guy with a 73 Corvette who needed a dated coded correct Carter Quadrajet for his concours L48 resto. This carb was a spreadbore, like I said if you never read the side of it you would think Rochester.

Well, after your beauty rest (come spring, I guess) if you can get the casting number of there I bet we will solve this mystery pretty quick.

And please don't do like so many guys who I've tried to help identify a Chevy intake. They come back with the number 18436572!!!! (The engine firing order for those who don't know!)

Actually, likely underneath the coil you will have the date code. In your case, if it's a June car, it will likely be something like E 20 6 or E 20 66 for May 20 1966 for example.

Haaa, it'll take longer than spring to sort out what I've got going!
Re the firing order, thanks for saving me the embarassment!  So is it simply a date code or am I looking for either 3931575  or 3888886  marked somewhere visable?
