to butt weld or not

here are pics of the 1/4's going on to my 70 lemans CONVERTIBLE...

All metal work is butt welds.

I can't take credit for the welding,  I hired a buddy of mine to weld and hammer finish the panels,  time consuming , but an incredible job after it is said and done.

He had 70 + hours into R & R both 1/4's and outers and trunk drop offs.  He spent about 5 hours just crisping up the 1/4's before fitting them.

the project came to stand still when I ran out of money, the 1/4 install ran over the estimate by double.  So I only had him do the tricky stuff.

I hope to have the metal work done by April , and blocked out by June

my 2 cents, .....On a side note,  lap welds are fine , when prepped correctly,  a flanger is used and a weld through primer is used.

prep ,  prep , prep.DSC09991.JPGDSC09994.JPGDSC09878.JPGDSC09866.JPG

Typical project, way over budget!

Sure looks like nice work. Butt welding is time consuming. I don't do exterior sheet metal but I've done a few floors, butted, and I know how much goes in to that.

My quarters were also butt welded, not by me, by someone who had many more welding skills that I. LOL. Even the guy doing the body work ( different then the welder) was very impressed and said he could not weld like that.

I'm learning....pay people for what their good at !! as hard as it is,,,it pays off in the end.

I'm still a jack of all trades, but as I get older , my time is what is the most valueable ( and keeping the wife happy !! )

I'm with you on that. I do what I'm good at and have the time for, but I send the stuff that requires special skills to those who have them. If I had to wait for me to have time to do (and ins some cases first learn how to do) the complex and time consuming stuff, my projects would never get finished.
