Where my Suburban is....

Expert Engines has been serving the public for more than 16 years and prides itself on being a leader in the field. Our quality work, fair prices and unmatched customer care gives us the advantage over our competitors. We are a state of the art automotive machine shop as well as a full installation centre.

We are Toronto's ENGINE EXPERTS; Repairing problems such as head gasket issues (over heating or coolant loss), broken timing belt or servicing, oil consumption, oil and anti-freeze inter mix and engine failure.

We service all makes and models. We pride ourselves on the success of our remanufactured cadillac 4.6L Northstar Engine.

All our remanufactured engines are built with top quality parts : AE Clevite bearings, Mahle pistons, Hastings rings, Fel-pro gaskets, Clevite timing melling oil pumps, and unmatched workmanship.

Nice Christmas present, sounds like the big old 5.7 Vortec threw a rod. Been down since Christmas Eve. Not happy, its got 210,000 km on it. It is what it is.

Luckily Tony went to the same high school as Hillar and I and they are Northstar experts too.

Engine is coming out in the morning. Plan is to build a new one from a bare block Tony has in the shop. I saw it today sitting in a corner, just waiting for all those new parts.

Tony says "I'll be Tickled Pink with the new engine" We are going to try and document the replacement in photos for all to see.

Got to see a Northstar out of a nice black STS on the bench today too, warranty job for one of the dealers, they sub to Tony. Dropped a valve, scored a Piston. Boy a bare Northstar block isn't all that different from a 350, but the heads are massive works of art.

Anyway Stay tuned.

I am sure I can get a photo of the Northstar heads, they were working on three engines today. Two out of STS's and one low mileage Deville, looked mint except it blew the head gaskets.

interesting points-guess it won't be "numbers matching" should be disclosed at the point of selling.

I hear OMVIC and UCDA has some nice new rules protecting buyers-full disclosure (more than 2 panels refinished), background checks on all trade ins/purchases for a used car lot, 90 return policy if misrepresented in any way (full refund with interest).

 Sorry to use your thread.

I think its great to fix it rather than throw it aside for political correctness and drive some cheap new miser type vehicle. I think its actually better to repair it than contribute to pollution by manufacturing yet another new vehicle. These GM full size are fantastic, I'm sure theres a ton of years left in it.

I don't hesitate to repair it. We love that truck and feel lost without it. I wish I wasn't doing this job but as you say it is probably good for another 5-7 years. I could have had them rebuild my engine for numbers match but it will actually cost more in labour, I think that is straightforward enough to see, double the work, tear down then rebuild.

From an economic point of view a truck with no engine is worth scrap value, by repairing it at least I can get some value out of it should we decide to sell down the line.

Sorry to hear about your little extra expense. That sure sucks.

It will be fun to see the rebuild taking place if you can put up pics.

It's an extra cost for sure but not as high as you might think. Engine Re & Re for less than the price of a GM replacement engine. I could have saved $1,000 by going slavage yard engine.

You see Carl, there is a process known as boring, it takes metal away from the cylinders in the block and lets you put in bigger parts....

Latest Update: Engine is out and I am going over in the morning to snap a few shots of the wounded beast.

Why do you have to change the ownership? The e-test should be good until it's scheduled next?

It's not like we will be racing any one in a 6,000 lb. truck, just want a decent level of HP and torque wink

Had one in my sts 6-7 years ago. Moved out pretty well. The wife love it. Alas, as the kids come, the toys go. Move over caddi, here comes the mini van!

Famous quote from 1965.......
The transition from 396 Turbo-Jet to 427 Turbo-Jet was as simple as boring the Mark IV cylinder block to match its Mark II roots. As Duntov told Car and Driver in the fall of 1965, "....this was done primarily to save weight. You must remember that cast iron is very heavy, and by removing 30 cubic inches of it we have made a significant reduction in weight."
Zora Arkus-Duntov, former Chief Engineer - Corvette

Of course, Zora was kidding, but there was nothing funny about the Corvette's 425 hp 427, a brutal big-block that owed nothing to any other production-powerplant on the planet. wink

I agree-good move to fix it-what could you replace it with anyway-engine job is dirt cheap compared to the replacement of the vehicle.
