The next night, after his murder, I (and my now wife) went to Nathan Phillips Square in front of Toronto City Hall and joined 35,000 other shocked people.
It was a cold December 9th, 1980. Many lit white candles. Some cried, sobbed is more like it. Others hugged. It was a very emotional gathering. We were all shocked at the senseless taking of Lennon's life.
John Donabie (currently early weekend mornings on CFRB but on CHUM-FM back then - and a good old Oshawa boy) co-hosted the gathering with the late Long John Baldry. We held candles; sang John's songs. The vigil ended with a spontaneous walk by many of the mourners up Yonge Street all the way up to 1331, the former home of 1050 CHUM and CHUM FM.
