Pardon my ignorance. I've found an item on ebay which I have bid higher that the existing bid (by the minimum specified). However, as soon as I bid it, it instantaneously comes back telling me that I've been outbid? What the heck? Feedback would be appreciated.... thx

I thought that it shows the current bid (which I'm outbidding). Do you mean that it can "hide" a higher bid? There doesn't seem to be a reserve either?...

Yes. Even if you bid higher it only goes a small increment higher. If 10 is posted and you bid 12 but the prior guy had bid 20 it would then go up to 13.
Does this help? Put the highest amount you are willing to pay.

So if i put an amount that is accepted, does it post my amount, or a lesser amount?

If you post say, 100, and its only bid to 85, then you would be the high bidder....And it will automatically bid it up to your amount(100) until someone bids over that amount

OK, got it. (Reason it does this is to affect those that increase the bid at the last minute by the minimal amount I would think.)

it's a bit like poker,, you don't want to tip your hand, so guys wait till the last minute to go all in with there max bid that their willing to own it for. referred to as sniping, the idea is , you get the item for the lesser amount than your willing to pay, and the price doesn't get drivin up on you.
I've been beaten out last second many a time, my rule is set it and forget it. place my max bid and walk away.

Thats a good way to do it, although I have got frustrated when I lost by $1.00 over my max lol
Yes, but just because you lose by a dollar does not mean his bid was only a dollar more than yours. His bid could have been 500 more than yours but it will only bid enough automatically to outbid you until it hits is 500 more bid. Make sense?
