Does look pretty neat. But look at how close the people are on the sidelines, isn't that a little close with only cement blocks and some fencing, don't these people know how much damage or dead people they could have if one of those trucks got away.
The drags are awesome BUt that doesn't look that safe for teh crowd.
You'd have to understand the mindset, Ray.
I distinctly remember attending a Corvette-only drag racing event in Quebec, back in the early 1980's, where the Corvette event organizer also happened to own the local drag strip.
I was working the tower and noticed some guys pulling up to the line without helmets. So, I radioed down to ask one of my crew to get a helmet on the guy, and the answer was, "Helmet? Hell, he's got a cooler full of beer on the seat beside him.........and he's drinking one!".
I won't bore you with the rest of the story, but like I said, you'd have to understand the mindset.
The drags are awesome BUt that doesn't look that safe for teh crowd.
Fun to watch but very dangerous; can you imagine what would happen if one of those rigs lost control, or some of that heavy equipment turned to shrapnel under load?
About 15 years ago we used to have this neat outdoor classic car show on the parking lot of a local shopping mall. After a while the street rodders began to show up and the end of the show became a burnout contest on the main drag, with people lining the sidewalks and the centre median. Just luck no one was ever injured, but after a couple of years the shopping mall called off their participation. Same thing is beginning to happen at the A&W where we go now.
The second last time I was at the Atlantic Nationals in Moncton they had the same scenario on the main drag on Mountain Road. I read that a year or two later the police cracked down severely and to my knowledge it has not been a problem since. I certainly didn't see any such activity last summer.
Like I say, great fun to watch, but not worth the risk to someone's life.
