RE: 6 cyl 1967 Pontiac Beaumont Sport Deluxe 2 door

And that is why I highlighted the Nov 10car. It is an A51 car but has no D55. It is an A51 Sports Option car, not an A51 bucket seat car.

That Nov.25th car may be the last 736 SD car.  Just before it Nov21 you have a Custom with A51 D55 and 4 days later a 736 SD A51. Must be between those days the 738 cars started.

That Nov 21st one has me confused now.  Is is is "sports option or not??

ok to sort the confusion that will be here!
#1 some info i recieve is cowl tag begining of body production
#2 GM Canada Docs -dated at finished production

there is a laps of 3 to 4 days between(to build the car from start to finish)
cars with body # are dates gotten from tags
without body # are dates from GM sheets

so being that

67 Beaumont sent me his GM sheet  Nov. 25th (end of production for his car)start was likely 3 to 4 days earlier!    (no D55) SD

Cheviac sent me his cowl tag (start of production November 21st)  (D55)Custom

So in actuallity these 2 cars were likely were built closer together with 67Beaumonts car actually being built before Cheviacs ,sometime around the 20th (his tag will tell)

so i believe around the 20th or so for the change

one thing that i can say in Georges defence is it seems every year has its own rules, the same #s mean different things year to year (even month to month in this case)

when you decode a bunch of cars together its easy to forget to change your way of thinking (he might have just decoded a pre Dec 66 car and then went on to this one and just forgot to decode it a different way.

I should have clarified. I am not bashing George or GM in general for what appears to be a mistake. If this is close to the only mistake Vintage has made, they do a lot better than I do at work!

Well, ok, my docs say my Acadian is a Pontiac too.......

But anyway, I am way more interested in the little details about these cars (and all the trivia that goes along with it) than I am in finding mistakes. This one I pointed out only because with what we know, it appeared to be fairly obvious that A51 did not mean SD on this car.

I think that's part of what we've been able to confirm so far (ie i agree with carls explanation above)... that an A51 736vin car without D55 prior to Dec.66 was a Sports Option...

To me this car could be one of two things...
1. a nicely optioned 6 cyl custom that accidentally was decoded as a 'sports option'...

2. a real anamoly, built for someone with some 'pull'...so they built a one-off custom 6cyl conversion to a SD after the 738vin cars came out and optioned it this way... I'm more likely to say this is not true...but not impossible...

If the car exists, its not too hard to verify... pull off a door panel and look for any evidence of the custom holes....not definitive, but if the doors were off a custom...then? if the car needs paint, then i'd grind away on the outside to look for evidence of custom chrome holes...

Another way would be to look in the trunk and see if the Sport Deluxe holes look factory, or take measurements for the holes compared to a known SD car.

Are the holes for Custom trim on the quarters behind the wheel visible inside the trunk on the Custom cars in 67?

Oh and how about the trim on the rear panel between the tail lights. Does it use the same holes, Custom/SD?

And how about a pic of the cowl tag? That should be pretty conclusive?

Yup, certainly no doubt you have one of the last, if not the last A51 Sports Option SD converts.

From what I have been able to find,
as soon as D55 appeared on the option list, A51 no longer meant the Sport Option.

At the start of '67 production the A51 Sport Option turned a Beaumont Custom (735 six cylinder or 736 V8) into a Sport Deluxe. It included the console as part of the whole package and you had no say in it. Consoles were automatically assigned to the car if it had on the trim plate: M35, M20, or L34.  That is to say you got a console with a Powerglide regardless of engine, a 4-speed (any V8), or with any transmission that you got with the 350-horse 396 (M13, M20, M35, M40). No legitimate cars that I have seen that were A51 Sports Option cars had D55 on the trim tag.

The latest car that I have seen that came from the factory as an A51 Sports Optioned 736-series Sport Deluxe is at the very end of November 1966.

I have seen a 736-series Beaumont with both A51 & D55 on the documentation. It was built December 2, 1966.  Vintage Vehicle Services said it was a Sport Deluxe, but it was just a Beaumont Custom with buckets & console. Yes, there was a running change at the start of December 1966. A51 re-aligned itself to what it stood for in the U.S., that is, A51 meant bucket seats and nothing more. At that point you could now specify the D55 Console as a separate option, or not. At that time in Canada D55 was now appearing on the trim tags to help assembly workers know to install the console or not since the Sports Option was now cancelled.

The cancelling of the A51 Sports Option happened around the start of December as the 738-series Sport Deluxe entered the picture. From that point on, all 396 cars were 738-series, could come with a bench seat or with A51 buckets, and could be ordered with or without the D55 console if you had buckets. The M13 became standard and was included in the base price of the SD396. The L35 (396-325) was added to the lineup as the new base engine on the Sport Deluxe.
You could order A 735 or 736-series Beaumont Custom with A51 Bucket Seats and also specify the D55 Console or not. Outside the car was badged as a Custom and had the full Custom trim package. it was no longer a Sport Deluxe

I know at least two people who claim they know the change over date (but for fear of helping cloners won't release it) but I think the info you've posted combined with the great work done to put the registry together can prove it didn't just happen one morning at GM and from that moment forward it was set in stone.

Thanks very much for your VERY informative post Cameron.

What did the cowl tag say on this car?

The option line is what I remember. It said along the bottom of the trim tag:

A51 D55 D99 M20

The car had a 327. Not all options are listed on the tag, just the options that had implications for Fisher Body (i.e. either installed by Fisher Body or at least prepped where necessary for later installation on the assembly line). N40, J50, L30, F40, U63 and even U80 were on this car but all that stuff was installed on the assembly line after the painted body with moldings arrived from Fisher.

So in theory, because it has D55 it should be after the changeover occurred then is what you are saying.

And on a side note, I imagine it's the same for Canadian Malibu SS cars?

Totally!

The transistion from A51 Sport Deluxe to 738-series Sport Deluxe did not change the outward appearance much, just the big block hood was added and the hubcaps were made standard (formerly standard P01 Wheel Covers being moved to the option list).

On the changeover from A51 Malibu SS to SS396 the outward appearance was a lot more pronounced.  Like the Sport Deluxe the SS396 added the big block hood and the hubcaps were made standard (formerly standard P01 Wheel Covers being moved to the option list). The SS396 also received new badging (SS396 in the grille and the back panel, plus Super Sport replaced Malibu SS), a blacked out treatment was added to the back panel (Chevelle emblem was also dropped from there), thin side stripes were added to the lower body side, plus a new grille with specific paint details and some additional secret openings stamped in. Inside they switched from a woodgrained dash strip to a black textured one, plus the nameplate above the glovebox changed from saying Malibu to saying Super Sport. The SS horn button carried over.

Of course the 738 Sport Deluxe & 138 SS396 used all vinyl bench seats as base, with buckets an option and console a further separate option.

Are you saying there's 67 Malibu SS cars with a 396? I've only seen 66. Don't doubt you, just thought is was a 66 thing.
