Hi I am a new member to this site, Great information! I would like some information on a 1967 beaumont that I have recently purchased vin 7361771101553. It is not #'s matching as it has a 1972 454 big block. I would like to know what diff it would have as I am going to install a 5 speed trans this winter.
Hi, and welcome. You want the original diff, or are you asking for a decode on the one in the car presantly? Post the casting # and I'm sure somebody here can help you. P.s if you are ever in Surrey, stop in at the wheelhouse for a cold one for me.
Thanks for the reply. I would like to know what the original diff was and also where do I look for the casting # (I have looked and cannot find it) The part # on the pinion is 3802513-11-14 and the casting # on the crown gear housing is ED30140PUI. Does this help?
Welcome to the forum. ED30140 is a three series 12 bolt posi carrier acording to chevy by the numbers book. Are you sure the pinion number is 11-14 not 11-41 ? Usualy thats the gear ratio for that pinion 11-41 would be 3.73's but 11-14 would not make sense. If you have the back cover off count your pinion teeth and ring gear teeth. Divide the pinion into the ring gear for the ratio.

Oh, and to prove what it had originally, you will need to find the numbers on the passenger side axle tube. It's hard to find. Front of the tube, usually a few inches outboard from where the tube goes in to the center housing casting. A mixture of digits and letters.

Could you check that number again on the gear? I am betting it's 3862513 and 11-41. That makes sense for 65-69 3.73 in the parts book I have. It has the stamping numbers for a lot of the different gear ratios.

That's the one that was for sale in Victoria I think. Nice and red, you can't go wrong!! I'm a Island guy too so make sure you take it to the Duncan Beverly Corners car show this year and we can chat.
I rechecked the pinion # and is3862513-11-41. Thanks for the info. The only # I can read on the front of axle housing is C00103 B. Is this close? The cowl tag #'s are 736172-10-11 9 R no 09 831909 G50 D99N-m35 Numbers are hard to read does this look correct. Thanks to everyone for your help
C00103 B . CO in 67 is for 3.31 ratio. 0103 is date January third and B is the plant code for Buffalo NY . Your gear ratio has been changed to 3.73. Unless that CO is CC then it would be correct for a 3.73 ratio.

And that would be unusual if they had been changed using GM gears. Typically, GM has had such a ridiculous price on gear sets that most people bought aftermarket.
Usually gears have a date code, at least the crown gear does. Any numbers on there ending in maybe 66? Something like 9 20 66 or something?

It seems at that rate then that the housing would not be original to the car. Unlikely a housing would be stamped in January and only installed 9 months later in a car.
