When a goal is NOT a goal...

Big game for us on Sunday afternoon. We are up 2-1 with 25 seconds to go in the second period. We are hemmed in our own end for two shifts. I have last change so I send out my biggest and strongest D to play forward and take the draw. I'm counting guys and one kid who was suppose to come off never did, he's confused on a good day and it a tight battle like this he's really scattered.

Anyway the Linesman drops the Puck, I'm hollering too many guys, Kaos, bing bang the score. Big celebration on the other bench and in the stands. Ooops now the referee sees too many guys on the ice. He goes over to the scorekeeper to give him the goal and send a linesman to me to tell me I'm not getting a penalty and the goal washes it out so no big deal.

NO ! I say I want to talk to the referee. Well he comes over. I calmly tell him the rule:

This is a false start. I tell him I had last change which I did and he never gave my guy the opportunity to get off the ice. He is responsible for making sure the correct number of players are on the ice before the draw. On a face off violation he sends my centre out of the circle and replaces him and sends off the extra guy. That's the rule.

He is a guy about 30 to 35, he looks at me and says I never had this happen, What should I do? I say to him the rule is exactly how I explained it to you. You should put 5 second back on the clock, and do the face off again, it's no goal. If we had scored what would you be doing I said. He says we have to go and talk about this.

No kidding 10 minutes elapses, I call all my players to the bench. Finally I see a linesman skate to our end and stand on the dot, the referee skates to the other bench. I tell my boys not a word or cheer, Big Ray has won this one!

Sure enough he rules false start and I save us a goal against! Final score was 3-2 for us, Wow.

Good story Ray. Sometimes the rules work in your favour. Nice to hear you were on the winning side. Not sure I'd have been too pleased to be the other coach but then again who wants to win like that?

Another rule anomolie with too many men on the ice that does not result in a penalty is "Illegal Substitution" This occurs when a goaltender is being pulled for an extra attacker on a delayed penalty or any other reason. If the player taking the goalie leaves the bench before the goaltender is 10 feet from the bench the play is whistled dead as an illiegal substitution, the face off comes back into the defensive zone and the goaltender returns to the net.

There is no shame in having a goal called back due to the rules being violated. I gave my team a chance to win the game. The fact that the other coach did not put up one bit of an argument is a testament to my knowledge of the rule book. biggrin

On Saturday evening at our son's basketball tournament, I sat beside a man who helped coach our boys basketball team last year. The opposing coach was losing badly and in frustration his chair took a little "trip". This man beside me knows the rule book well and said that is an automatic technical but the refs did nothing in spite of him calling for it.

I wished they would have just to show the boys stuff like that is not acceptable.

Point being, depending on the ref, all the knowledge in the world won't help a bit! Good for you Ray.

Great work Ray, not trying to hijack the thread, but I am the goalie coach for my sons team. ( he's 7) the last 3 games 1 goal against. My boy is doing fine. Isn't minor hockey great? The last game after the horn, the ref skated by the bench to say our goalie is awsome!(my boy!!) This is what hockey is all about, the kids!!!

You said it Mike, it's the best, exciting too and such a joy to see the comradrie and team work grow. I never knew how much fun I would have going back to smaller guys, I was actually a little worried wondering if i could still get motivated every practice and game but these little guys love it so much it just takes hold of you and off we go.

Great work on your son's part, it is really great to see a young goalie building confidence at the right time of year too, it means a lot to his team and parents too. I can see your buttons bursting!

The guy in the very centre of this shot was once a 7 year old goalie too. Now he helps the 13 year olds, even suits up for practice while one of our guys is out with a broken wrist.

You got it Ray! Grass roots game at it's best! Seeing their eyes light up at a save or a goal is priceless. But more importantly is 2 minutes after it's ended, they're off on something else, just the love of the game.

unfortunately, or fortunately I'm not sure which - I never played hockey.  I didn't learn to skate until I was an adult.  (what kind of a prairie kid am I?).

Had I played hockey, I would have been a Ken Linesman type of troublemaker, and likely had the crap pounded out of me.  I was like that in floor hockey, and even playing high school volleyball I could get under the opponents skin, nearly leading to a bench clearing brawl once.

I used to envy the other kids who played hockey for the community, and when I was in junior high there was still school hockey.
