I have purchased a MSD 6AL ignition box for my 72 pontiac lemans. I bought the box from the local speed shop a fiew years back thinking it would increase power and efficiency but do they work or do anythning?
Theyre great. Carl is taking you for a ride ...lol, the 6 AL has a rev limiter chip so you can chip it to save overrevving, or if your kid is driving it, pop in the 3500rpm chip. It doesnt need much of a distributor to run it but the MSD one is real sweet too ! If you have a stock or real mild engine, you probably wont get much of a performance improvement though.
I swapped a 6A box and MSD distibutor for an HEI. The MSD stuff seems to run better on my car than the HEI did. Track times were better, so maybe it was making more power.
Better spark is a good thing, I think. I do know that it helped me get thru Aircare easier.
Thanks to MSD 6 AL boxes they work good when you 'sometimes' miss a shift, the set rpm pill will save the motor & the multiple sparks before & after TDC 3,000 & under & one big spark after that clean up a fat running modified motor.

It really depends on what you are doing with the car or how you are driving. Are you racing or a nice street driver? Depending how you use the car as you can see by the previous posts should help you decide.
If you are using the car for street use and looking to get rid of points you may want to consider a HEI distributor or a Pertronix or Crane conversion kit if you want to keep a stock appearing distributor. The Crane kit has a rev limiter built in as well.
love my 6al, much faster response and more power too! now i can get rubber on 3 of the 4 (700r4 automatic) gears and i'm pushing hoosiers 22" wide of tread per side.
