Canadian Ford stuff but still interesting

1st time ive heard of these, how about you Toronto guys?

Mustang Stallion

Not all of the special edition Mustangs came from the factory. Sometimes the dealerships took matters into their own hands and came up with some pretty unusual ponies.  Take Mainway Ford in Toronto Canada for instance. They created the Mustang "Stallion" as a high performance muscle car obviously catered to the young male buyer. These classic Mustangs were fastbacks only, and highly optioned ones at that. Under the hood was either a K-code hipo 289 or the new for '67 big block S-code 390 GT engine. Transmission choices were the 4 speed manual or C6 automatic transmission. Also included on the Stallion were the heavy duty suspension package, power disc brakes, tach, posi-traction rear, styled steel wheels, upgraded Deluxe interior (including special woven seat covers) and special metallic paint.

But wait, there's more! The most striking feature (in a good way or bad, you decide) was the pair of Cougar rear tail lights. The wide horizontal tail lights weren't exactly ground breaking, being previously seen on the Shelby and later on the California Specials, but the vertical ribs of the Cougar tail light housings mated to the aggressive Mustang fastback rear lines definitely gave a new look. To draw even more attention to the rear end, it was blacked out and a "STALLION" badge was attached to the center above the gas cap, which was also custom and featured a rearing horse engraving.

Continuing with the "blackout" treatment a unique black vinyl trim was added along both sides, basically following the long trailing swoop of the fastback shape. The factory simulated side scoop pieces were also chromed to finish off the exterior look

The 1967 Stallion was a special promotion Mustang from the Toronto based Mainway Ford dealer. Back in mid of 1967 Mainway placed some advertisements in canadian car magazines, at least the one pictured above in July in the Canada Track and Traffic mag.
The Stallion was initiated, custom-designed and sold exclusively by Mainway Ford, Toronto (Canada), although the ad was asking for franchise partners. The Stallion could be ordered with the 320HP 390cui engine in GT-version. Optional were a 410HP 390ci and a 550HP 427 engine. We have yet no information on the specific engine mods on the two optional engines. But acc. to Kevin Marti research, there were some of them produced with a 289 Hi-Po engine.

4-speed manual trans or a C6 auto trans could be choosen acc. to the advertisement. Performance was expressed on the outside with a special paint, Stallion emblems, rear Cougar taillights, a very unique vynil side treatment.
On the inside a tachometer, console with radio, Deluxe steering wheel and seat belts and a rear fold-down seat plus wooven seat covers didn't left the driver thinking he was having a serial Mustang.
Everything indicated that this was a Horse of a Special Breed - A real STALLION.
Kevin Marti (www.martiauto.com) checked his Ford files and found out, that probably only 8 Stallions were produced by Mainway Ford, 4 of them had a 289 Hi-Po installed and the other 4 received a 390 from the factory. So indeed their project did not came to much off the ground.

The car was a limited edition dealer option from Mainway Ford in Toronto, Ontario, CANADA. The cars came from the factory with the 390, 4 bbl and 4 gear tranny. Mainway then replaced the rear tail-light panel and tail-lights with 1967 Cougar units, chromed the side vents, and added the chrome trimmed, vinyl along the fastback. The interior features the brushed aluminum panels that were a Mustang option.
Stallion badges were added to the fenders and the trunk lid, unfortunately these pieces have been missing since at least 1976. The car still has the pop open gas cap with the Stallion graphic and a similar badge on the passenger side dash. The graphic is a rearing Stallion, a mirror of the Ferrari's, but a much tougher looking horse!

Mainway apparently offered a number of engine upgrades from the standard 320 horse-power S-code 390. Listed were the 410 horse-power 390 and a 550 hp 427. This car has a Mercury 410 ci engine (390 block) with a lot of work done to it. 12.5:1 compression, Holley 850 cfm and 5.13 gears. 450 horse-power and 11.3 et quarter miles.
The advertisement picture is from Ford of Canada historical archives featured in Rare Finds section by Jerry Heasley Mustang & Fords (August 2000),pg 94.
The car on our website was featured in Rare Finds by Jerry Heasley Mustang & Fords (March 2001), pg 86.
We have not seen another one, but apparently there is one other known to exist.

What options were there on the Stallions?

390 or 390HiPo or 427cui engine GT equipment - special HD suspension 4-speed manual trans or C6 Select Shift Cruise-o-matic Special side vynil treatment Limited slip rear axle console Power Steering Power Disc brakes DeLuxe Steering Wheel DeLuxe Seat belts F70x14 wide oval belted tires radio Fold-down rear set STALLION emblems Cougar taillights Special steel wheels

I have been a car spotter for many decades and I can honestly say that I have not seen a Mustang Stallion (the 1967 dealer version, not the 1976 Mustang II version). Wait, I do recall seeing a 67 Mustang convertible with the Cougar taillights. Heck, there were millions of Mustangs around back then and people were looking for ways to personalize them or otherwise make them stand out from the countless others around.

When I see the blue fastback & big tires I instantly think of that 1973 movie The Last American Hero with a young Jeff Bridges and Gary Busey.

The police would impound all the cars on the lot for a week, take the license plates and levy a $2000 fine. If the dealer had the audacity to open their mouth in protest, the cops would make the fine $10000.

I say it in jest, but the Street Racing (sic) law as it is written is a piece of crap. It is heavy-handed and the cops have been told to enforce it mercilessly. An errant tire squeal is treated the same as driving through a residential area at 100 km/h, which is utterly ridiculous.

The cops don't make the laws; that law came from the McGuinty government. The OPP commissioner Julian Fantino gives his input but he does not have the final say in the matter.

Heard of that long ago. That picture of the rear end is fairly recent. Look at the Volvo on the left or the mini van in the background.

Drove by where that dealer was last night. In the early eighties they built a large building that still stands. I think it was where City Buick/Pontiac was on the Danforth.

Funny how a lot of us buying new cars over the years told the dealers not to put

their badge on the car or they could keep it. Now we are looking for them.

I guess Wild Child changed to a 427 later. In that video I just watched it had a 427 in it. Probably for match racing.

WOW on the Stallion gascap!!!
Looks like somebody's a winner as the Kiji ad is gone already?.
Has somebody here crossed over to the darkside?.

I first knew of the Mainway Stallions from an ad they ran in a Mosport program..
And we've looked at them briefly here in a past thread along w/ a few other more well known but unique Canadian dealer specials!.

http://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=118110&p=3&topicID=15129138

Looking at the great Canadian stuff in these threads posted today it seems us Canucks used to be more on the ball!.
What happened?.

Hey, I also have one of Henry`s 1928 Model A`s

Guy that owned the gas cap replied to my phone message a day latter. Said he had hundreds of emails but no one had pulled the trigger on it. He said he also had a set of NOS 428 Cobra Jet emblems and I could have it all for $175. He was working in Oakville so he drove them to me in Stoney Creek. Would have never seen them if Fred had not posted them here on this great site.
