Digital odometers

Just a rant guys.
I waste a lot of my time looking at , hanging out, driving and even buying & selling cars. THe one thing that amazes me is how much faith people put in odometers. Since the inception of ECM controlled digital odometers which record up to 6 or even 7 digits that can show a million klms. or more and seem to be tamper proof it has proven how far a vehicle can go. That is great as far as I'm concerned, but it has me wondering how can people be so guillable to believe on old cars with the mechanical easy to tamper odometers always seem to have low mileage? Or have never been rolled over ie. 50,000 miles or klms instead of 150,000 or 250,000 on a 25-30 yr. old car that has had a complete restoration, new paint & body, new interior, rebuilt engine, etc, etc. no
A strong case in point is the value of Corvettes for example. The cars before the mid 90's are advertised very seldom with more than 99,000 "actual miles" where as the the later ones with digital tamper proof odo's always seem to have more miles? They are usually cheaper. Porsches are another great example. They are notorious for have non functional mechanical odo's on the old ones,( "Just quit working last week") but they are advertised as" low original miles" then in the next statement "engine rebuilt, new  suspension" etc.
The same goes for GM trucks.
By the looks of the eBay and other sites bidders are dumb enough to believe this crap and not judge the car for what it is but what the odometer states!
There really is a percentage of low mileage cars for sale. BUT that percentage is very, very low.
Can people truly not tell by looking? How can an interior be worn out and replaced or suspension & brakes be all done on a a car with 30 or even 70,000 on it? I am glad for computer controlled odo's as it has levelled the playing field along with recording of klms. at plate renewal as well as CarFax reports and dealer records on computer file. It has nailed a few crooks and has shown how well a car can truly last.
Anyone else care to share opinions or comments?

The next time you look at a car with the mechanical speedometer, take a close look at the odometer, if it is less than 100,000 the numbers will be pretty well in a straight line, but once it goes over 100g the numbers will be noticibly out of line.

Good point Earl. I too am amazed how these people advertise. I would be embarassed to tell people how much work has been done to this vehicle if it in fact has the low mileage that they state it has. People must just blurr by the info once they have read the great low mileage shown.

Even the modern digital ones can be reprogrammed.

That's not always the case. It did happen but not always. I've seen cars that were  brand new back in the 70's that didn't line up after a few weeks of driving.

Yes I have heard of that, but still have yet to see it happen. I'm sure it  will be more common as the technology gets cheaper and becomes more available. But with all the ways that info is stored now and easily accessible it's harder for "mile dialers" to get away with it.

Over the last couple of years when we were still GM, I told people to bring me VIN's if they were looking at used cars. I caught two roll backs that likely saved some people a bit of money. One was a pickup that showed well under 100k that actually had well over 200k. I don't know why people are so dumb to try these days with all the dealers recording mileage on recalls. Just cause it's off the regular 3 yr/60,000k warranty doesn't mean the dealer will never see the vehicle and record mileage again....

I have the address of the shop in Toronto, who can fix your broken speedo/odo while you wait    pre 03 you can take in the unit .. after 03 you need to take the vehicle, in case the body computer is broke... hmm
