window regulator repair


I have just repaired the 1/4 window reg. on 52 Torpedo back. The crank spun, but nothing moved, after reading on-line manual, I started to remove it. The last instruction said to roll window down & remove reg. Well If I could "roll" it down,I wouldn't be fixing the "damm thing" I managed to get it out & drilled out the rivits for the gear drive, small gear "stripped" I had extra regs. that came w/car but they were either a 4 door or 53-54 but g/drive looked the same. I drilled out the rivits & it was the same drive. Located some flat head rivits, & had to install 1 rivit [loose] before dropping in g/drive as no access to that hole. Took unit to local tractor dealer & used theit "rivit" press, & "she roll up & down" the coil sprg. was missing [lost] so I am using the one off extra reg. & will "pre-load" it after I get it back in for rolling window up, [assume thats how it would go, to make it easier to roll up] So these "suckers" can be repaired, with a few"BEERS" & lots of thinking,[ that hurts]

The very first thing I did on my car, the right rear was half-rolled down and would not budge, don't want to get caught in the rain, eh?

Nice job Dave, at least yours still has the inspection panels. Previous owner re did inner panels & only left a small access hole to get in there. Was a total Pain in the A$$ trying to get regulator out. I just came in from shop, put it back in & it goes up & down, just have to put the coil sprg. back on for pre-load!!!!

Whoa! I had trouble even with that big access panel, I can't imagine how much aggravation you faced without it!

And I confess to not having to do anythng to my regulator other than soak it in penetrating oil and carefully work it back and forth until it moved freely - not a major rebuild job like you did. But every time I look at that window I rememer how I fixed it - any you will get even more satisfaction from your job well done, Pete!

Darryl, I think that "tool" is for glass removal in "KIT FORM" non-reusable, & you have to use dustpan & wisk, when done!!!!
