Yeah, I'm bored.......

This being sick is for the birds!

Anyway, one more pic I think is kind of cool cause of the story that goes with it. I took this picture a couple of weeks ago when we were in the area for our son's basketball tournament.

Before my dad met my mom (1930's), he used to spend his winters inPiney.JPG bush country about 80 miles  from here in the southeast corner of Manitoba. He cut firewood by hand and sold it. This is where he lived for the winter. This log cabin has one room. No electricity, no water, plumbing, sewer, nothing. It has a wood stove, table and chairs and a couple of beds. I can't even imagine how nice he smelled by spring!!!

The cabin is still looking relatively solid even now considering it's approaching 100.  A number of us Stevensons still own  the 160 acres and the cabin. It's basically worthless on the market but for us it's kind of cool.

Family history is super cool.
My wife and I live on property that has been in her family since 1827.
You should see some of the relics/artifacts we've found on the property just by looking around (old trash dumps). My metal detector has found a few things but no coin stash!
The house we live in was moved to it's present location by horses and huge sleds. It's around 150 years old.
I should post some pics.
Any more Stevenson lore/stories Carl?

Yes, please post pics. I love that kind of stuff too. It's funny how we differ. My brother couldn't care less about that kind of thing!

One thing I should have added is that apparently there was one time that my dad walked home from this cabin. I believe it was 2-3 days to do the 80 miles!

We look at things and do things so much differently now than they did so long ago.  Some of what they had and did looks like so much more fun!

I could go on with Stevenson stories forever. My dad wrote a Stevenson family history book in 1966, two years before he died. It goes back to when "we" came to Canada in the early 1800's.

When the Stevenson's came here they first settled near Beachburg Ontario. Is anyone on here near there? I am told that the original Stevenson home is now an office for a place that does rafting on the Ottawa River. Does that all make sense?

I've never been there but hope to go some day.

Wow, that is a neat looking house. Is that typical style for homes in your area?

A very typical 100+ year old Island house ... they are all across the Island. There are hardly any rural brick homes ... only wood.
The foundation is "Island stone" (red sandstone). Each block must weigh 5oo pounds ... no mortar ... just gravity. Red clay basement (everything is red herebiggrin).
Could you imagine moving this house about a 1/4 km. with just a horse team and sleds!

... and that picture was taken in the Summer.

My father was born in the Beachburg and Forresters Falls area.

Isn't there someone from the Renfrew area on here?

Ted

Cool. There are still some Stevensons close by there but not on the original farm any more I don't think. I believe it's all sold off.

I realy like those old family stories. Most of my relatives live in England and have not been in touch for years. I will have to get all those family secrets and stories of my father while he is still with us.   Get well Carl. Have had my share of sickness over the last week.  Now the grandkids are sick and we have been looking after them. hmm.gif
