fellow car club member dies at 53

eds car.jpg            A fellow member of the Gimli car club died yesterday. He was only 53 life sure sucks some times. He had cancer it took its time to he was told almost a year ago they had done all they could.
He never got to drive his last car he built. It is a Nova SS not sure of the year but I do know he paid over 10g for the paint alone. It is flawless here is a pic of it in his garage before it was complete.

This is terrible, on the eve of Hillars tribute too. Two men, two great cars that they never drove. Puts things in perspective doesn't it.

Carl, 57poncho's brother is from Gimli.

That is sad Vern. Just a bit too close to home for this 52 year old.

That's why we all have to live in the now because you never know when your time will come.
I'm saddened to hear about this.

That cursed cancer. Our friend passed away Monday evening. She was 44. I was building a garage with a nanny suite over it for them 18 months ago and she was diagnosed then. One of those extra special people as we would get fresh baking and drinks most days and so on. Leaves a 16 and an 18 year old. As one old guy used to say you are only one breath away.

My condolences. We are burying a friends wife today. She was only 42 and died of epilepsy. I am a firm belivier of living life today as it seems as we age we lose friends on a seemingly regular basis. The banks and finincial instituations are brainwashing a lot of us to save for retirement to live a quality lifestyle in old age. I agree we should save some money but at what cost, not going on a trip or taking a family holiday or finishing a project wether it be a home or car. I am not saying we should go in debt to do these things but I think it is OK to spend some savings to enjoy life TODAY.

Sorry to here that vern, and everyone else who's been affected by the big C lately. I am in this boat as well at the moment. I am a survivor, I had leukemia 20 years ago and beat it. But last week a friend from high school was just diagnosed with leukemia, so I've been travelling those old roads again trying to help her and her family and friends through this. I just tell her to keep the faith, and take it 1 day at a time, we'll get through this. It can be beaten, I'm here as proof.
Again sorry to all those that are dealing with this and other health issues, I can relate.

A positive outlook is our best offence in this fight.
And yes live for today, but not like there's no tomorrow. If you can do it now, do it, enjoy every moment you can, you never know what's coming.

That's how I got into this old car thing, bought my 65 after getting out of the hospital, I wasn't waiting any longer for an old car. We celebrated our 20th anniversary 2 weeks ago.

The union I belong to is a big supporter of Leukemia Research. The United Food and Commercial across Canada have raised millions of dollars for this fund. In Ontario they have a bottle drive in conjuction with The Beer Store once a year in which voulunteer workers accept donated empties and all the monies are donated to Leaukemia Research. Hopefully someday there will be a 100% cure.

Last year my sister spent over 6 months in hospital with the same cancer in her leg as what Terry Fox had years ago. They told us that back in Terry's time, 80% of people died from this and nowadays it's 20%. A lot of progress, but will of course be better when it's 0%. It's because of this and the fact I turned 50 in January, that my nephew and I will be working together on my '69 Parisienne ragtop this spring and summer. You just never know how much time you've got. I want him to know the car inside out because I've told him it's his when I leave the planet!
My heart goes out to everyone who has had to endure disease, illness and death of loved ones so recently. Time does not heal all wounds, just teaches us how to cope the best we can.

Here is the obituary

EDWIN SAWA (published on March 06, 2010)

EDWIN SAWA Edwin Sawa passed away peacefully on March 2, 2010. Ed's memory will be forever cherished by his wife Liane and children Steven and Ellyn. He will be missed by his devoted companion Joey. He will also be lovingly remembered by his brothers Jim (Judy), Gord (Barb), sister Ellie (Gord), mother-in-law Lillian, brother-in-law Glenn, sister-in-law Janne (Scott), numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents Anne and Walter Sawa, father-in-law Victor Wlosek, and Amma Snowy Peterson. Ed spent the last two years dealing with cancer. During this time he was determined to keep a positive attitude and did this by reflecting on the many blessings in his life. He was most thankful for his family and friends. He had constant support from so many family members, lifelong friends, neighbours, work friends, car guys, and special visits from dear little friends Carter and Isabella. Ed was so grateful for the care he received at CancerCare and the Health Sciences Centre. We are also thankful for the help of the palliative care team and Riverview Health Centre. Ed was thankful to have been employed with Hussmann Canada for twenty-five years. He took great pride in his work and was pleased to have worked with so many dedicated people over the years. He travelled extensively for work and made friends in every town he visited. Ed had many happy memories of his younger days. He had great times with his friends and family and was always the life of the party. He was a talented goalie and played for teams in Gimli, Riverton, and Winnipeg. He loved to golf, fish and go on camping trips. Ed was a car guy and was passionate about classic cars. His 1967 Malibu and 1969 Nova were his prize possessions. He enjoyed being a member of the Gimli Car Club and had lots of fun cruising with them. Ed's most important roles were as a husband and father. He was devoted to us and was a proud dad. He took great interest in everything Steven and Ellyn were interested in. He practised every sport, listened to every story and watched every movie. He made every day special and we will miss him so much. Funeral service will be held on Saturday March 20, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Parish, 341 Munroe Avenue, Winnipeg. Those who wish to make a memorial donation may contribute to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermot Avenue, Rm. ON1160, Winnipeg, R3E 0V9, or to the Gimli Car Club Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 582, Gimli, MB, R0C 1B0.

Just sitting here thinking about Ed he was 5 years older than i. At our age now it does not seem like a big difference but when I was 16 he was 21 I and can remember when I just got my licence he would be tearing up the streets with his 1967 Malibu . I would look at that car and wish it was me. He always had a hot girl sitting be side him. He was never the type of guy that would ignore you or say get lost punk he would always say hi. He got married to one of my sister in laws best friends. She has been suffering with MS for a few year now and he was always there to help her. But in the end it was her taking care of him. He was such a car nut he even came to Would of Wheels last year in a wheelchair to check in on our booth and say hi. Last time I seen him was at our club Xmas party he came with his son and brought along some prizes for a draw even though we weren't having one. Even when he new the end was near he still had a big smile on his face and a big hello for us all.
