Electrical charging problem

Got a "overcharge " problem on 64 Catalina, not showing any charge on factory dash Amp. gauge, but volt meter on Batt. is showing 16 volts!!!  Took cover off V/reg. & moved points that dropped volts to "around 13" Any way of test V/reg?? If it's "screwed" I'll go to Internal Reg Alt. but how do you keep the Amp gauge working???  Must have to jumper it somehow, there's only 2 wires going to V/reg. I also turned on H/lights & high beams, this dropped it to arounf 14.9 volts  I load tested the Batt after having it on "trickle" charge all night & it showed OK!!! Also cleaned the V/reg terminals & points????

If you go with the built in regulator you effectively cut the ammeter out of the circuit. It won't work and you'll need to install a voltmeter for monitoring. This was what I was told before converting my 62 Pontiac from generator to alternator with built in regulator. It tuned out to be so: charging system now works great, but the ammeter does not work.

Maybe someone here knows another way.

V/R can cause havoc,, it's amazing how we forget about the little things, and they are adjustable and setable. I spent 1/2 hour on mine tweaked it like the manual said, works like it's supposed to now !! go figure !!

Think mine was the orginal, nice & clean inside but the resistors on backside were quite "rusty, NOT BAD for 46yrs of service, guess the warr. has run out????
