Gear Reduction Starter Mtrs.

Has anyone switched over to one of these?? I'm running an Olds. starter mtr. on my 64 389, as I swapped out the tranny. to an Olds> Turbo 350. The starter sometimes "GRUNTS" on turning it over "cold" & it's even worse when "hot" [heat sink] I'm running about 10 1/2 to 10 3/4 to 1 comp. ratio.  It's either try one of these starters or "maybe" use a "FORD" starter solonoid conversion, heard this will work for "hot crank" problems, but this happens cold as well "sometimes"!!!!!

I used one in a mild small block, no problems, but it was more a space issue, not gear reduction I was after.  What is your intitial timing?  Too advanced will make the starter grunt everytime.

Craig, I'll check timing shortly, dist. may have moved, I know I was running 34 deg. total adv. & had no "ping' when set there, any less & it "rattles" real bad!!! Still has last yrs. gas in it [with Sta-Bil] but it started doing this again late last summer, this is the 2nd starter on it. 1st one was drawing way too much, this one was OK till late summer????
