Fuel sending sensor?

Where would I find a new fuel sending unit for a 65 Beaumont? Is there any way to test that circuit?

Spectra Industries is Canadian and they have them, I'm sure. They make them for my Acadian and lots of other older applications.

Is it in the car now and not showing correct?

It doesn't show at all but the wiring is there. I tried to reground it but i didn't work.

Hmm, I know there is a way to test with an ohm meter but I don't know the specs on it. If I get a chance later tonight I will see what the service manual says. I think I have it for 65 Beaumont.

Is the gauge stuck about a 1/4 and never moves?

Have you done a test on the wire from front to back to make sure there are no breaks in it?

If it's only a bad ground, it will show max full all the time.

I have to ask my brother about the problem he had with a 3/8 sending unit and a gas gauge for 5/16 line. They send different readings for the size. Its been some time so I don`t remember but I think he had to change the sending unit back to a 5/16 one to get it to work. Thinking about it reminds me I should ask if he still has the 3/8 one because thats the one I need.

If you have a variable resistor kicking around (like the volume control from an old radio), you can test the gauge by attaching one end of resistor to the feed wire to the sending unit and the other to a clean ground. Turn the key on, and turn the resister knob and if the gauge moves when you turn the knob, you know you have a sending unit problem. That's how I diagnosed my gauge on the Pontiac (and my 54 Chevy and soon my 59 Dodge). 90% of the time it's the sending until. They are in a pretty hostile environment..

Hi Carl, my fuel gauge starting acting up a few years ago... when i put gas in it shows full...then will only go to 1/4 tank...only jumps betwen the two? Any ideas of what might be wrong? at least it gives me some warning...

Sounds like the sending unit. The sending unit on my Laurentian did all sorts of crazy things. A new one fixed her right up.

Way past full is usually a poor ground. I would start with fixing that.

No movement, stuck at 1/4 approximately is usually no power to the gauge I think. However, I would do the ground first of all. It is possible you have two problems. Not impossible that the sender is bad on a 43 year old car that sits a lot. The contacts may be coated with varnish.
