Odd old headlight?...

This headlight was in my Beaumont when I bought it 20+ years ago.  Were they commonly used?  Must have been an aftermarket?

When I was a kid working at the gas station (mid 70's), there was a couple of guys who ran aircraft landing lights in their cars! That sure looks similar if my memory from 35 years ago is right.

That's a 100 watt landing light. They'd fit right into the high beam socket on a 4 light car, but you'd better be running relays, or you'd cook your headlight switch and some wiring!
Some guys swore by them, the people coming the other way would swear at them!

Ever since I've owned the car the light switch would need to be wiggled in order for the lights to stay on.  Last summer I replaced the switch.  Not an easy replacement as the wiring harness recepticle (for lack of the proper terminology) had melted around all of the wires.  No relays present, therefore I agree with you 100%!!
Darndest design.  Flat glass lens, allowing the light to go wherever...

Thx all for the feedback.

BOY, those bring back memory's. used to have them in the 70's & yes, you do have to use relays, or you "fry" the switch & wires!!!!

Pretty cool looking light.Sort of looks like the old carbon arc search lights the tug boats out here.Hated them ,as they got so hot they would burn the paint right off the housing! No wonder your harness is melting eh?!
