1965 SD convertible and hardtop value

Hi guys
It's been awhile since I've been on the site but I'm hoping for some opinions.  I recently found a 65 SD convertible and a 65 SD hardtop sitting in the country.  I got a hold of the owner and he's asking $1200 for both cars.  The vert' is in rough but restorable shape.  It would need floors, passenger quarter, trunk floors, and a full resto.  The hardtop is in much better shape body wise, most of the bucket interior is there including a complete dash(same with vert).  I think both cars are missing there motors and tranny's but the rearends are there and I believe the hardtop has a 12 bolt.  I'm going to go back now that I have the owners permission and get the numbers off them.  Any rough guesses as to value and where to find the important numbers(trim tag location etc.).  How hard are parts going to be to find?  Are they worth the $1200 if they can't be fixed and I part them out?  The guy also says he has a set of clean doors, trunk lid, and bumpers.  I'm going to upload some pics I got from the owner if I can.  I have crappy 28.8 dial up some it may or may not work.
Thanks for any help or opinions, Steve.

As seen by the response you can't go wrong at that price. Even if you buy them and don't want to pursue it there are lots of guys here that will jump at them and I'm sure you could be rewarded for your effort. I was just double checking when this was posted to make sure it wasn't April 1. Good luck with them.

even tho those cars are pretty tough, i imagine there are a few good parts, better yet restore even. Nice find. If they are in Alberta that would be real nice

Thanks for the info and support guys.  I got both cars today (Sunday) for $1000.  The hardtop is in pretty good shape considering the windshield is busted.  All the rocker trim except for the front fenders is there and in good shape.  There was some very minor damage on the drivers side trim which you can see in the pics I posted. The front clip was gone when the last owner got it because of an accident.  The frame is mint but has a light kink in it at the passenger side by the firewall from the accident.  You can see from the pics the right front wheel is bent from the control arm being bent. The dash is complete with the clock but wasn't ordered with a tach.  It rained today so the ground was wet and I have two herniated discs so I didnt check the rearend for the 12 bolt.  It was over an hour drive to the cars and I didnt want to drive home in wet muddy clothes especially because I had the wifes car!!It also has 2 SD emblems on it (dash and trunk).  I took pics of the trim tag but the camera wasn't on Macro so they didn't turn out but I remember the paint code as N and the interior is a gold color which you can see in the pics.  One bucket is missing and the back seat.  Other than some minor surface rust the floors are very solid with no holes or rot anywhere.  The doors, trunk lid, quarters, roof, firewall and rockers are all very solid with mostly surface rust if any at all.Because of my back I couldn't reach the hubcaps in the trunk but there was at least two and they had three prong spinners.  There was some chrome in the trunk but I couldnt see it well.I did see what appeared to be the headlight chrome bezels for a 66-67 Beaumont and maybe more rocker trim. All the glass is mint except the windshield.

The contvertible is rough as you could all tell by the pics. The trim tag shows the paint code as Y and the top as 2.The trim was hard to read as the hood was wired closed but I think it said 995.The interior in the car now is black. It appears to have a bench seat instead of buckets. The dash is also complete with the clock and radio still there but no tach. The frame does have rot in the same spot on both sides. It will need a lot of work to restore obviously.Floors, trunk, quarters all need to be replaced. The doors and passenger fender are still good. The drivers fender is iffy.Theres no rocker trim on it but there is a box of parts that I didnt see that comes with the cars and the seller said he was pretty sure the box had a couple of SD emblems and some chrome.Im keeping my fingers crossed!!The car has a mint SD emblem on the dash, one on the passenger fender, and maybe one on the trunk.I did check the rear on it and its a 10 bolt. The convertible top frame is all there and actually in pretty good shape.

Along with the mystery box of parts the seller has; theres also a set of mint doors, a trunk lid, and the complete grill and with headlights etc. that came off the vert, plus a set of nice bumpers that have been stored in his garage loft for years.

As I stated earlier I have two badly herniated discs and so I havent been working.I knew the cars were probably a good deal but wanted to make sure.Money is real tight which is why I wanted to make sure that even if they were to far gone to bring back to life I wouldnt be out the cash.I was lucky enough to have a good buddy who lent me the cash to buy them.So what to do now?Im thinking of selling the rocker trim and SD emblems to pay back my buddy and then have the cars to restore when I have the cash.I also bought an original 1970 LS6/M22 SS454 Chevelle that was 1 of less than 231 LS6s imported into Canada new last year before I knew my back was pooched so I dont know when I can get to these cars.Knowing the vert frames are big $$$ I may resto-mod the vert with a newer LS V8 and custom built suspension and frame. If I resto-mod it then selling the rocker chrome isnt a big deal.Seeing as the vert has a 10 bolt and no tach it likely isnt a L79 or L76.If the hardtop has a twelve bolt I may restore it if I can prove its a rare car with GM of Canada docs.Id like to hear members opinions on what I should do.What is a fair price for the rocker trim and all the SD emblems I have if I do decide to sell them to a member here?  By the way there was a 68 Beaumont 4 door on the property but I didn't get to see it.  I'll get picks of it in the next week or two when I go pick up the cars.  The guy said it's pretty rough but the trim etc. might still be good.

Once again thanks guys, Steve.

The Chevelle looks very nice too! Congrats on all of the "finds", and good luck with the back.

Thanks Geoff.  Looking at your avatar I'm pretty sure the headlight bezels in the trunk are for your car.  Is it a 66?

Can any members give me a value for the rocker trim, SD emblems, and the spinner hubcaps?
Thanks, Steve.

The spinners are exclusive to 65 SD if they dont have the Pontiac Motor Division in them.  like the photo.

in good shape.. could start at 100.00 bucks..   in poor shape... depends how poor.

as for rocker... 65sssd is the expert on that stuff... I'm sure he'd be able to tell you what its worth.

Hey Kelly I thought you were the expert when it comes to rocker trim and rare SD trim. As for the SD emblems you should be repoping then soon so crusty old ones would just be wall candy and worthless. It's always good to see rare parts for sale on the internet. The condition is the most important. If it's bent or wore through where the clips are It's pretty much garbage. My blue Sd HT has the rocker chrome on it but it is junk. It's thin, has holes, and has waves in it. Most people wouldn't buy that set at all. For a full set of rocker trim in nice shape I would pay 1000.00. I agree that for nice spinner caps 100.00 and dented ones as low as 50.00, and for nice SD emblems 100.00 each and pitted ones can be as low as 25.00. I don't know but am out to lunch? You can get a new set of rocker chrome for 2000.00 so any more than that would be a waste of time and money?

Yup.  (The lens used for the avatar does distort them a little though.)   Now that you mention it, I'd be interested in a passenger side one if it becomes available.
