I'm looking for an alternative to Paypal for taking online payments for CP items and donations. I'm getting grief from Paypal. For some reason Paypal is not charging PST to Ontario buyers. After a frustrating 20 minutes on the phone with them and getting the same "script" read to my by someone who could hardly speak english, I demanded to talk to a supervisor who admitted they were having techinical problems. It's been 2 weeks and several email complaints later and nothing has changed. Their solution? "Send your Ontario buyers an invoice for the tax owing". Nice.
Is there any members here in Canada who deal with another online payment solution. All the others I've seen are too expensive for a small operator like me.
This is the way I have it set up on Paypal- when a buyer is from Ontario, Paypal adds the PST. If not they don't. It worked flawlessly until 2 weeks ago. Since I have to claim 8% pst (soon 13% HST) I lose that amount on every sale to anyone in Ontario. The other alternative means taking away the "add to cart" feature and instant pay and have folks email me with their order and I send an invoice- doable but for more time consuming..
You will have that problem with BC soon as we have the hst too. It's a total rip off! The government doesn't know how they are going to collect it so why should you?
Hi Todd, I think your idea of removing the add to cart is a good one. PayPal is still the most secure and easy way to take amd make payments on the net, even though they have some issues, nobodys perfect!!
Maybe a simple branching as they go to checkout - one source I use (not for car parts) has a screen that says "Will this ship to New Jersey" (button to click for Yes and for No) and although I have always checked the No button, I suspect the Yes button takes you to a different checkout where sales tax is added?

Those sites work great Dave but they are expensive. If I was a high volume retailer it would be cost effective, but for CP items, its out of the question. Paypal is free (other than the fee they take at the time of purchase). It was working great until the tax issue. I guess for the low volume of Ontario members I can eat the 8% (or send an invoice for the tax)
Why not just add 13% to the bottom line of everything you sell? Just have Paypal process the total cost without any separate tax portion. Keep that 13% back from every Ontario order you ship and turn it in when it's time for "them" to get their cut. The rest you just keep for the site.
I know you've said the Cp stuff isn't exactly breaking records, but the people here actually buying it likely could support a 13% price increase no trouble.

Raise the prices to include the taxes & hassle. As everyone seems to agree 13% is fair for you. Sooner or later you have to make a little bit of money for your time & effort. If anyone begrudges that then maybe they need to look for another site to hang out.

Perhaps. I've also toyed with closing the site to non members and charging new members a one time $20 to join. I've seen other sites do that and they seem successful. Perhaps with a $20 fee those who join will be more apt to participate.

Good idea Todd. You shouldn't have to struggle with financing this site when the rest of us get all this education and enjoyment from it for free. What's $20, a pizza and a coke. Charge that every year. That's nothing and don't think you should feel bad in asking for it. Just my opinion. I waste $20 at alot of other places in a pretty quick time.
Sign me up!!!!!!! I agree the knowledge we gain from one another is easily worth that!!!!! I may gain more than I give, but college couldn't do as well as the ppl on here!!!!!!

I agree Todd.. I'd pay 20.00 to you for this site.. it's been a "god send" in so many ways. I'm already a member of the victoria CCCB club and it's over 30.00 a year.. Maybe start a new thread and present the question.

I have a better idea. Make 427Carl pay .25 for ever picture he enlarges. You can quit your day job
Guaranteed there are those who would be turned off by the 20 buck fee. Usually, that would mean they would come up 20 bucks short in their budget for things such as smoking, drinking, gambling, etc etc etc. And although this site is just as addictive as any of those things mentioned, I think this place may be a more worthwhile investment as far as return goes!
You got my vote for the 20 bucks. Just say when to send it.
I would have trouble giving up a pizza and a Coke as Jerel mentioned though.... Those happen to be a weakness of mine!
