intake manifold

DSC01153.JPGdoes anybody have a four barrel intake for sale that would fit on my 59' 283? Preferably one with the oil filler tube and in the southwestern ontario region so i could easily pick it up instead of shipping a heavy parcel.

I have one I would be willing to trade for an aluminum one of the same vintage, the oil fill tube in front.

oh ya I also have a Preformer and a Torquer if anyone is looking...since we are taiking. Neither have the oil fill tube allthough the torquer can have one put in, it is just not what I thought would be good on the 283.

r u looking for correct?? I have a old cast iron 62? I think , made for the WCFB, but you can run a AFB or AVS on it.

I have a couple of WCFB's as well, but I think they are 'other' than chevy linkage.

I'm on the praries, so shipping would be by bus....

I used to have one around here but I haven't been able to find it lately. I had it and the correct number Carter for a 300 horse 4 speed. It's gotta be here somewhere because I know I never sold it.

im not looking for a numbers correct one, a cast iron would be fine. I just would like the oil fill tube on it so i dont have to replace my valve covers because i like the look of them, and i would like to keep it somewhat original looking. But.... i also want it too be reliable as I am moveing to mexico and i wont really have the money to put towards the car all the time, so whatever works!! I also really like the Q-jet, but thats also the only carb ive ever had before this roch. 2-barrel.!!

Yea we use the old style rochester 2brls, im not to shure how many different models are available, but I think there are not to many different old rochester but more info would be great. they are the most dependable and responsive carbs you can use, hard to rejet but work great stock.

2GC with the fuel inlet is on the side like pictured at the top and are a small base bolt pattern. starting in 68?? they went to a larger bolt pattern, fuel inlet is in the front. they do not interchange.

small base is rated at 325 cfm roughly..

my problem i think is that i just cant get this carb to work good. I should get it rebuilt by somebody that knows what there doing (i did it, and its still not right). Also, i need to get this thing timed right. It was working fine last summer but now its messed up. It will probally be something stupid, i just havent found it yet. I have a 305 intake you can have Tiny. Actually, i have the whole engine in bits and pieces, so you can have whatever you want.

Just to offer you another perspective ,.. if you don't mind.,..

Those 2 BBL carbs are actually very dependable with very good throttle response for your application.  If you're having problems with this one.,... you could probably ditch it entirely and buy a rebuilt one for very little money. And you don't have the hassle of changing the intake manifold,.. and ,. bonus,.. it's still "original" equipment that the car was ordered with (for original value sake,.. if that's worth something to you).

If you do switch to a 4 BBL ,. the actual "horsepower" difference on a 283 on a car that size will be negligible.  It may add 20 HP,.. but on a car that size,.. you don't feel it.  You'd have to do a bit more to feel some difference,.. like heads ,.. cam etc,. all of which is much bigger bucks.  There is also the possibility that if you only change to a 4 BBL (without any other engine modifications) ,.. you may be over-carburating the small 283.

So,. just thought I'd offer you my 2 cents.   I went the route of adding a 4BBL with different heads, cam etc on my 283.  $900.00 later,... I wish I'd just left the 2 BBL on it.  After all ,.. it was just a small block 283 on a heavy car. It was  a cruiser,... not a quarter miler. So I wish I'd left the carb and used the money on some cool wheels instead. That would have been easier to change ,... and I could have taken them off the car when I sold the car! Oh well,.

Anyway,..

That's a really nice '59 you've got.  Nice to hear that you're enjoying it! Can you post some more pics?  Would be great to see

for my 55 gmc w/ a 283 i picked the intake off ebay a couple of years ago. its for a 65 327 and the carb is called a square 4 rochester. very good setup. not as much horse as when i had the vintage eldebrock and holly but alot more dependable. i sold the eldebrock last year to a member on board.

of course i dont mind your perspective 64 hard top, thats what is great about this site!! I totally agree with you, and i wasent looking for more power because like you said, its a big car and it is just a cruiser. I think ive just had problems with this 2-barrel from the get go, and i never had any issues with my 4b that i had on my trans am. What is happening is the high idle cam thingy wont stay put, and even with a manual choke ive had problems making it work right. Its just something small and probally easy to fix, but i havent really had the time yet to do it. Does anybody have a pic of a roch. 2 barrel from the linkage side?? Maybe the linkage arm has to be bent a bit more or somethin. Its just weird because it was workin fine last summer. What happens is I start it and its really hard to keep it going, and as soon as i stop fluttering or mashing down the gas it stalls on me. I look at the carb and the fast idle cam is down so i bassically have no idle. aahhhhh LOL!!!

I need to find a good old school guy to help me build my rochester, im told I need a wack of different parts to make it work really well. I guess the rochesters off dump trucks had bigger jets, and accelerator pump.

I am just guessing but it sounds like your choke coil in the intake isn't working. It does have a rod going down to a small housing beside the carb on the intake manifold?

Check it some morning when it's ice cold ( I mean not run since the night before. Outside temperature doesn't matter). One pump on the gas, don't start it, remove the air cleaner lid and look at the top of the carb. The choke flap should have snapped shut when you did that.

heres two views of the carb. the second pic is before i cleaned it and with no manual choke. Did you mean the tube tube going from the choke to the exhaust manifold Carl? If so, it was never there and plus i put headers on.

The choke with the thermostat mounted under a housing on the intake that you referred to ,.. is called a "remote choke" and it's a model  Rochester 2GV.  1964 was the first year for this "new" style of choking system.

The photo of his 283 shows the choke thermostat housing mounted directly on the carb.  It's a model 2GC (as indicated by the link that Rog provided)  That setup relied on a thin pipe that ran from the housing to the exhaust manifold.  This setup was used from the factory until 1963.

The photos that Trevor provided shows that the pipe is gone.  There's your problem!

If the car now has headers,.. I don't think there's a way to make that automatic choke system work.  In my case,.. I had a 2 BBL carb ,.. model 2GV on my 283.  I ran a manual choke cable.  It worked perfect!

Trevor,.. you may want to give that a try.
