1964 Parisienne modified exhaust

I came across an exhaust system on the internet a while back that was intriguing.  It was on an Impala.  Same X frame as my ' 64 Parisienne.  It has the mufflers in the back (modified obviously).  I never liked location of the mufflers on my '64.  They protrude slightly when mounted in the factory location  towards the front of the X frame.  The exhaust on this Chevy looks a lot "cleaner".

I was wondering if anyone out there has any thoughts on this exhaust system pictured.  Advantages,,. disadvantages.  ???  Note:  ,.. it also has a cross over pipe.  I've heard all kinds of reasoning by hot rodders for installing a cross over.  Any thought on why one would go to the expense ,.. ?  Or is it there because the mufflers are mounted so far from the engine?

Also,... what kind of rear brake drums are those?

Thanks

I BELIEVE THE CROSS TUBE IS TO EQUALIZE PRESSURE AND GIVES A LITTLE MORE TORQUE.

I agree with 68 427's post.

The placement of the mufflers or resonators as far back as possible is done to minimize noise heard inside the vehicle. On the system for the 400 2+2 February feature car, this is what was done and that car sounds absolutely awesome from the outside, but when you are cruising you can hear the radio and carry on a conversation nicely.

stock brake drums , but have the pin drive adapter for the wire knock off wheels bolted to them. makes them look like Buick finned drums at a glance.

Any estimate as to how much torque that might be gained? One of the local rodders put a cross over on every car that he owned. He was a really big beleiver in the added benefits. He claimed that it adds 25% torque.  I couldn't say if this is the case ,.. I've never installed one.  If it was accurate ,.. and you were running 400 ft lbs from the factory.,.. then you'd feel the difference.

I COULDN'T SAY FOR SURE, BUT 25% SEEMS A LITTLE ON THE HIGH SIDE. IT WOULD BE DIFFERENT FOR DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS OF PARTS. SUCH AS CAMS, HEADERS, INTAKES, CARBS,ECT.

Most people who have done it say you can feel it. So how much does it take to feel it?

Thanks kindly for all the comments.  I think I may try the exhaust as shown but eliminate the cross over.

I'd still do a crossover. Just do a pipe instead of that big box thing.

I think the jury is still out on that one. I have seen dyno's showing improvement and others showing no improvement. However, the main reason to install a cross-over pipe is reduced exhaust volume inside the cab.
ABOVE FROM INTERNET

I have a H pipe on My Ventura, and the car is loud, but no drone..  It seems to be smooth up to 7200 in high gear!

I just ordered a new exhaust system for my StratoChief   3 inch to Flowmasters 2.5 inch tailpipes I insisted on no H pipe   with 500 Hp I'm trying to cut her back!!!

Which is your supplier for exhaust pipes?  Do 2.5 inch pipes go over the rear axle without any clearance problems in the vicinity?  Or do you run your pipes out in front of the rear wheels?

...we had a custom system installed on ours by our local Midas shop. They said because of the awkwardness of the X-frame setup they couldn't install the crossover pipe, which I wanted (crossover pipe is supposed to equalize the exhaust pulses between each cylinder bank and give a bit more power and smoothness - I agre that that claim of 25% is way too high though. I think 5-10% is more in order..) Then our mechanic told us that GM intake manifolds had a crossover built into them unlike, say, Ford smallblocks. I have never been able to verify that anywhere else so really don't know. I also don't know if a crossover in the intake mnfld. fulfills the same function as a crossover "pipe". Anyway, we have a non-crossover system, for now anyway, with Cherry Bombs directly underneath the pass. compartment and I can't say the noise at cruising speed is unbearable. But you know you have Cherry Bombs! Which is what we wanted anyway! We're basically happy with our 2" all-the-way-back system. We have the pipes exiting at the sides directly behind the rear wheel wells, with foot-long chrome 3" extensions that don't extend past the body panels ( too greaseball...), which looks very clean and has also drawn lots of compliments..

I HAD A FULL-LENGTH 3" OVER THE AXLE SYSTEM ON MY '66 BISCAYNE WITH A CROSS-PIPE. SOUNDED GOOD AND NO CLEARANCE ISSUES.

That's good to know.  I was leaning towards 3" pipes as well. I guess you had no problems placing the cross over.  ,....'66 was already uni-body,. right?  I understand that '64 was the last year for full X frame  ??

YES '64 WAS THE LAST YEAR FOR THE X FRAME. '66 WAS A FULL PERIMETER FRAME NOT A UNI-BODY.
