Any idea on whats the best way to remove the steering wheel? Any Tips? How do you use the puller? I have a feeling the cracking noise is coming from the turn cancel cam (broken).
There should be two threaded holes in the wheel, on each side of the main nut. Remove that nut, then thread the two bolts through the puller into those holes, and then turn the big bolt against the shaft. It will pull the wheel away from the shaft. Sorry, no photos.
Seems easy enough. I was reading there was springs in the column? do I have to watch out for any of those, trying to see the Cancel Cam, if its broken?
It is probably the springs not the cam. You can purchase these at Canadian Tire. They have a section in most stores where you find these old school parts from door knobs to barke pedal pads and everything in between. Th esprings are small and brittle, that's why they break.
You might need to take off a something but not much to see the cam. The little springs I mention are installed on the cam, usually a white plastic material.

From my experience the steering wheels can be on there TIGHT. I have had to tighten the puller up then give it a tap with a hammer to get the wheel to break free. Be careful with the cancel cam too as they can be brittle.
Never used a "puller yet, I just position the seat so I can get my knees under strg wheel, & with pressure on wheel loosen nut, Use a brass punch & give the nut a 'whack" while using knees to press the wheel off!!! Just did this today on buddy's 69 Olds Cutlass, 2 smacks & wheell popped right off!!! Maybe one day I'll "splurge" & buy a puller. but this has worked decades for me!!!

I just made a puller when I needed to pull the wheel. probably have 3 of them somewhere.. 3/8 thick flatbar x 1 or larger wide.. threaded center hole (I used 1/2 NF) and the 2 holes (one on either side of the threaded hole). about 5/16 in size.. I only made it because I was using material I had on the shelf... I didnt want to crack the wheel since it seemed brittle at the time.
I had some of it apart today, I was so attempted to try DualquadPete's way, but I didn't want to take the chance, this weekend, I will get a cheap puller from Canadian Tire.
