Ok, thanks. I asked him if that could cause a problem but he wasn't sure. Next time I'll make sure that stuff is out before a shutdown.

Thanks.

you should run a disc clean for all files and then a defrag before you shut down..if you haven't done one in as while , it may take a couple hours.

Thanks Jim. I am not sure what you mean by run a disc clean but I'm sure our kids will know!

I defrag it about twice a year. Should it be more often?

You'll get that screen when the computer has been shut down improperly - either by hitting the power switch, or more commonly, as a result of a power failure or power bump.

When windows shuts down normally, it cleans up after itself - deleting tempoaray files that may be stored on the hard drive. It keeps track of where those files are on your hard drive in RAM (memory that gets deleted when the power is off). If the computer shuts down without deleting or saving that file infomation to non-volatile memory (your hrard drive), then when the computer restarts, it doesn't know where all the files are on the hard drive.

Windows comes up with this screen to prompt you to let it scan the hard drive to find all those lost file fragments and clean up the system before it starts making a mess again.

I am not a computer guy, but that's how I understand it....
