I don't think there is a cure. I wish someone would come on here and say there is, but I can't imagine what it could be.

That is sure common on the old mirrors.

Bill
If you put it on your winter car it will rust into place in one winter of driving in Toronto. smile
I have seen more mirrors siezed than floppy. Maybe try some blue loctite on it and tape it into place until the loctite cures. You won't be able to adjust afterwards but I promise not to move it when I drive your SD. wink
The other thing you may try is a spring center punch on the ball when the mirror is pivoted up. There should be enough of a raise around the mark to make it tighter.

Is there not a flat snap ring that holds the mirror in the frame? If you can get the glass out you can then tighten up the 2 screws on the ball.confuse

loctite works , i always loctite the mirrors on my harleys, i like red, i put it on the ball then move it around till the ball is coverd then set and never worry about them for a wile , even red brakes down after a wile on a harley but should be fine for your car.

I did this on my '66. Had a "floppy" so I bought a replacement. Once I got the replacement, I worked up the nerve to try to dismantle the original. It worked, so now I have a spare (thinking of mounting it on the passenger side).

I held off posting because I couldn't remember exactly how I did it. Then I saw this post. Mine was exactly like it. There are two rivets and not two screws, but I used a center punch to snug up the little piece that presses against the ball. It worked for me.

Sorry for any confusion, but as I said, mine was exactly like the one in the supplied link in that it had the snap ring.   The shape of the mirror bracket is different however.  Mine looks like this one (minus the Bowtie)

http://www.opgi.com/product.asp?topcatid=5&chapterid=&VendorCode=&grpcode=10686&ProdCode=PR01610&yearrange=

I made a half-hearted attempt at pulling the ring but was pretty sure I was just going to break the mirror so I purchased a replacement. After I got the replacement, I figured I had nothing to lose so I got a little more "persuasive" and managed to pop the ring and get into the pop rivets.

If there really is no snap ring, then is the mirror epoxied on to a backing plate or something? Any chance a little heat might loosen it? Maybe the only way is to break the glass, do a repair and then replace the glass... A glass repair shop might know a trick.

As an aside, someone on another thread said that the replacement with a Bowtie was more expensive than the mirror without the Bowtie, but the non-bowtie mirror was not an exact match. This was not my experience. The non-bowtie mirror was almost twice the price of the Bowtie mirror and is an almost exact match to the one I took off (you have to put them side by side to see the difference).
