Plumbing help---Moen shower faucet leaking

To begin, I am not a carpenter or a plumber!

For a long time, our shower has had that annoying post-nasal drip. Today I noticed it's a stream now, not a drip any more. I have the chrome stuff stripped off and pictured below is what I am looking at. Where do I go from here?

I am guessing that the tab sticking up in the middle is some sort of clip? It seems to wiggle slightly. Do I pull it up and then slide out the cartridge or whatever you would call it?

It's called a diverter. It looks worn out. easy as pie to replace. Just make sure to shut off the hot and cold. 30 second repair.

Diverter is on the spout, used to turn on the shower. You dont have to turn off the hot, cause the cold pressurizes it.

Hi Carl,

Moen has a "lifetime limited" (5 -year) warranty on faucets manufactured after 1995.
http://www.moen.com/consumer-support/warranty

We have all Moen in our house.
You have to take the defective part out.
I hope you have a second bathroom ... time to put an "out of order" sign up.

I built my new bathroom this year. Being in the country, I had to bust up the floor to install the drains and the ejector pit an pump. What a pain in the a$$. Being a pipefitter it still took me over a week to pipe in the crapper and my new wet bar (Beer is always cold here!working after work.

Thanks for the help guys. I hope to be able to get parts this morning as soon as someone is open. Being in the country makes that a bit more of a challenge.

We have a second bathroom but there are no shutoff taps that I can find in the supply lines to this bathroom so it will be a total shutdown when it's time to repair.

This Moen unit is from 1993 when we built, so likely warranty is a non issue.

Thanks for the tips guys. I got it done this morning.

I went to our local Home Hardware. The guy working there (who I didn't even know) was nice enough to give me a cartridge without me having the old one removed yet. I explained I didn't want to take it apart until I had the new one because it meant shutting off the entire house water supply.

Not a bad job but it took a pretty hard twist with that special tool from Moen to break it free. Once I got it to do that it came out with a bit of tugging.

The new unit has no o-ring on the back end like the old one did but it seems to be fine without it. Anyone else changed one and seen that?

Our water isn't very hard Chris. We don't have a well if that is what you are thinking. The wells only start about 20 miles north of here.
