68 GTO value......

Please don't look down on me because it is not a Canadian car, but I would like your opinion on this car.  I know it was brought out of the U.S. 5 years ago.  I will attach his email to this so you know what I know.  I am just wondering your opinion on it's worth.  I see them restored for around the $30 g mark.... whether they sell or not???  I have always wanted one, and hope this is the right one for me.  Oh, also the wife has OK'd the potential purchase and I can keep the Lemans to finish fixing.... the kids will be driving in under 10 yrs!!!!  Let me know your opinion, as it is greatly appreciated and respected!!!

THANKS, here is the email I got from him.  Hope to go see it this weekend!!!

Hi there,

Ya, it is pretty tough to let it go... The car is a 1968 PHS documented 4 speed car with the hideaway headlights. It has the original WT motor as well as the original M21 4 speed. I have put new rubber on the car, BF Goodrich radial T A's, new rear springs, had it painted  (which needs to be redone), had the carb sent to Toronto to be professionally restored,  I have all the chrome, the original exhaust manifolds, original fan shroud, a brand new vinyl top, all new window felts, new rubbers (trunk, doors ), vinyl front seat covers NOS, which are still in the boxes, hood ornament, I even found original tail light housings and lenses ( that was a $800 touch). I also have the PMD center caps on the rims which were painted and look great. It has original drum brakes all around, and the buzzer still works when you put the key in..There is alot more which I am forgetting now but you get the idea...
The car has been in storage and has never seen snow since I bought it.... The car came from Georgia so I doubt it has ever seen snow.. I have put roughly 200 very gentle miles on the car in the last 5 years..

Well I don't want everybody jumping all over me, but I have an insurance appraisal for a 1968 GTO in hand, completed on September 26, 2009.  This is an Arizona car, has not been driven much in past 10 years, BFG redlines on Rally I wheels, rock crusher 4 speed, 360 HP 400 CID V8, air conditioned. Interior is almost perfect, body is almost perfect, paint job is almost perfect - $18,100 Cdn.

If I remember the last time I saw it, I don't think the paint was as bad as he made it out to be. It has been a while though. The only reason the felts, rubbers, and vinyl weren't put on was the paint. The wheels on the car are Rally II's, and I thought the Muncie was rebuilt???? I will share more as I find it out, but thanks Ray... I appreciate your input.

Is this because of the linkage????  I've always wanted a 4 gear car, just never got one........  I do agree with the rally I wheels, they do look nice!!!!  I can tell you he
wants less than the 18k you have quoted, but more than 10k.

What is DRI????? I had a look today, and the big paint issue is the guy didn't put a flexing agent in for the endura bumper, so it has a few flaking spots. The car is a documented solar red, vinyl top car. It has the #'s matching motor and 4 gear with 3:55 safe t trac rear. The car in my opinion looks decent. I couldn't get pics because the shed it is stored in was kinda dark. Hope to get some when it comes out on the trailer......

Not sure how close this is for comparison but I know of a 68 convert that was a matching numbers 400 HO automatic car with a few nice options (tilt, power windows, 8 track) It took a fair bit of time to get his price. Red car, white interior. Paint was driver quality, engine was completely redone at a considerable expense. When we talked to him he said rock bottom was $22,000. It did eventually sell though.

This is pretty much what this car will look like when the top goes on..... The paint is driver quality now, but I think if the paint on the endura was fixed and the vinyl put on it would look alot better.  Will know more later in the week.  He is taking it out of storage, and it is going to get all fluids changed and get it running.

you wouldn't touch that car for less than 18 in Alberta if its a good solid rustfree complete car. I think its a deal at less than that

The clutch in the car I refer to is H E A V Y, and you have to beat up the shifter to move through the gears. Not complaining just saying.

Remember that insurance appraisals are usually higher than what you can get in the free market. I'm with Elroy on this one sounds like a fair deal.

I thank you for your input... I think it is a good deal as well!!! From what I could see underneath it looked good. Definately more solid than my Lemans.......

Bad..... I just wanted the re assurance from others who have been in the hobby longer, so I knew it wasn't a bad deal. I just want to hear it run now, and that could close the deal.

I love the 1968 GTO, I prefer them to the 69's because they are less common, nicer grilles and tail lights and vent window. Go GET IT ! Good price...

Thanks for the input..... Hope to finish the deal this week, he wants to get it running first as it has sat for better than a year. Wants to drain all fuel and have all fluids changed. I want to hear it run because he said it had a "sticky" lifter.... going to get his mechanic to look at it. That's why I want to hear it run..... will know later this week...... :)

As of Sunday, it is still at the mechanics.  He works full time during the day, and works in the shop at night.  The guy I am buying the car from has said he would talk to him this week and see what is going on...... so I'm still waiting...... :(

confusemaybe if he has not started on it, you could go see it on a lift,
and see if frame is good and condition of floors, and recheck the paint..  He said it needed paint, and you said it didn't     about 6 thousand dollars, if he was right...biggrin

Hey Uncle Bernie! If ya want it, there it is, go and get it, but ya better hurry 'cause it could go fast
Hmmm.....almost sounding like an old Badfinger tune here. Anyways, although I know you appreciate everyone's input here, if YOU like the car THAT much and it's a price you think is fair and the car is decent to do up, then what the heck? Go for it buddy. If it gets away on you then you KNOW it's going to be one of those, "The one that got away" things that haunts you the rest of
your life as choruses of "should have bought that car" ring through your thought processes every time you see one driving down the street or at car shows. Now, all this being said? Just go and get it and be happy!! LOL!

Thanks guys..... It is basically a done deal on the car, just no money has switched hands. I should have posted that earlier, right now it's all waiting on the mechanic to get the car done! I have seen it sitting at his place, but it is not inside yet. I have big driving dreams for this summer, and at the rate he's going it will be mine, then into storage lol!!! I want to go get some pics of the car the way it sits, but have been busy getting more done on the Lemans. Will get it soon I hope.......
