Why is '55 a significant year for you?

Just curious as to who out there might see '55 as a significant year and why?...

Sorry for the confusion...1955.

Preceded by upscale Cadillac and Oldsmobile (1949) and wannabe Buick (1953, but the nailhead was never really a contender), 1955 unleashed the to-be-mighty Chevrolet (and Canadian Pontiac!) and Pontiac OHV engines. The REAL start of performance years (yeah I know there was a HUGE bump upwards in the mid-60's but it all really started in 1955 - coincidental with rock and roll? I think not). Also, Chevrolet (and Canadian Pontiac!) moved from kingpin to more modern ball-joint front suspension. And styling also took a giant leap.

Even Ford and Chrysler made a big jump in styling in 1955 - also first Polymouth V8 (Ford OHV V8 debuted in 1954, a bit ahead of the curve, but styling was still old-fashioned for 1954 Fords).

So to me, 1955 was a true milestone year in Northern American car production.

Plus my mom had a 55 Chevy 2dr hardtop that I thought (still do!) was beautiful, and my dad had a 55 Chrysler that he let me take to the bodyshop and nose and deck smile.gif

Here is data I have compiled showing C.I.D. over the years, I think 1955 shows as relevant (as does 57-61!)

I think 1955 was the Most Significant change in the automotive world to date. Not only the small block V8 BUT don't overlook the complete styling change of all the US manufactures. Out with the old fashioned look and IN with the new MODERN styled cars. Most 55 Models made the 54 Models look OLD and they were only a year old !!!!!!!

The '55 Chrysler C300 with Hemi 331 power was a stand out car also. '55 Ford Crown Victoria, and a '55 Pontiac Laurentian 2dr hardtop in 2 tone was very stylish and almost understated compared to later models.

55, first car I had when I turned 16. 1955 Chevy 150 2dr. sedan. 6cyl stick for about 2 weeks. hauled that out & put in a small block that I had been "building" for 6 mths prior, with money from working as delivery boy, & know how from Auto shop at good ol Danforth Tech.

My "almost" first car was a 55 Chev 2dr hardtop - it was my mom's car and the one I drove until I bought my own car.
