Buying a car in Ontario

When buying an old car do I have to get it appraised again for sales tax? Say If I was to buy one do I have to buy an appraisal just to confirm what I actually paid? What if the appraised value is lower?
Thanks

Buy the car, pay tax on what you paid, unless the ministry deems you paid to little, then out comes the blue book, and wham! they tax you on what they think you should have paid!. Darn liberal Nazi's.

I doubt what I have in mind is even in a blue book.

you need an tax appraisal for it, if it's a private sale. they won't take a written bill of sale as proof.
dealer bought, no appraisal.

then you will need an insurance appraisal.

They will charge you tax on the greater of the 2. Also we will have to pay 13% taxes on private sales after the new law is in.

What 70 SS Acadian said.

The bill of sale is usually on the back of the UVIP package now, and then you need an appraisal, Which ever is higher, the sale price or the appraisal price, is the one they screw you on.

haha, got that straight.

Then you need a appraisal for insurance, insurance, safety certificate, plates, etc.
They should be paying for the appraisal, since they don't want to base it off the bill of sale. Scam artists, just to get more money for taxes.

how many times can you pay tax on used goods.....

hand in my pocket ...hand in my pocket.....

why is it OK for politicians to be criminals?

here in SK, they had the same thing, public pressure and an election year , we had to pay sales tax on any used vehicle over $3000,  they dumped it.  BUT on nay RV or recreation vehicle, it still exists!

criminal .... If you can afford an RV...you can afford to pay OUR tax!

my rant for the day

Thats right rabbit64cs. That's how I look at it too.
Because, even when you think about it. The car has already been charged tax on before, has it not? New cars I understand tax on, but used things, no.

If your appraisal is less than bill of sale, scrap the bill & only show them the appr. no sense paying more than you have too!!! If your "pullin"a fast one on the Prov. wait at least a mth. before you put it on the road, as the M O T & insurance computors are tied together, if you show a "low ball" on 1st Appr. the insurance Appr. which will be higher will stand out like a 'sore " thumb if done too soon!!!  That way you can say you had to "dump" some more into it to get it on the road!!!!! Did I say that out loud???

Can you say "Eliminate the middle class"? Anyone see Michael Moore's movie "Capitalism, A Love Story"? Even if only half of what's in that movie is true, it will make you sick to your stomach.

Cars 15 years old and older need a appraisal for tax  the appraisal can be at a  dealer!   MTO office has the form      A different appraisal is done for actual insurance...  Most dealers charge 50-100 for a appraisal and its pretty basic  My car was 3000.00 at the time

Wow, I guess maybe I don't want to move to Kenora.... Are you guys serious? You have to get an appraisal and pay for it to boot? That is amazing. I can't believe we pay more and more tax to let those guys in Ottawa stand there, bicker and fight like 2 year olds, if they show up for work at all.

One more rant added to Rog's rant!

Ya, its pretty much,

I know if you bought it as is

You need a
UVIP package
Bill of sale
Appraisal

Then to get it plated
you need insurance,
which needs another detailed appraisal
safety certificate
Plates
Stickers
