Personally, I think I'd rather go co-ed but for the sake of us uninformed yanks could you define co-op.
Here in the states that borders on a clan or a cult.  Brings up images of guys with beards and woman with long dresses.

You chose the field you want and they try to get you in. They are for high school credits, no pay.
I did mine at an auto collision  centre down here. Prepped the cars, and got them ready for paint.

Yep, co op is a work term in the field you are studying. When I was in high school I did a co op in Grade 13 for my computer studies. I worked at Canada Trust Systems Development. They liked my work ethic and offered me a summer job. I was 17 or 18 working on the 7th floor of a bank tower, getting 12 bucks an hour (big money for me back then!) wearing a shirt and tie and working flex hours (you had to be at work between 10-2pm the rest was flexible as long as you put in 37.5 hours per week). I should have stuck with it.. They wanted me to go to college and major in computer programming and I would have been guaranteed a job. I was bored with banking and wanted to work with cars...

We get a lot of co op kids at work and if they work hard and show potential we usually hire them on as a lube tech. If you work hard at that we give them an apprenticeship. It's the BEST way to get your foot in the door.
