What Is The Strangest Automotive Tip That You Have Heard ... Good, Bad, True, Or False

Someone told me last week that a couple drops of Tabasco Sauce applied to a rusted-on nut will help loosen it.

Sounds like a old wive's tale!

This does work, but not as good as a spraycan of penetrant....and it takes a lot longer!

When painting your engine....use a torch after a spray pass. No runs and it drys instantly.
Be careful of flare-ups.

Mothballs in your gas tank are said to improve octane. The naptha ones I believe. I wouldn't try it though..

The foil paper in cigarette packages (do they still have this?) is supposed to be great for removing rust from chrome bumpers.

Have you ever seen moth balls ...

(old joke)

I knew an old guy that poured a bit of lacquer thinner in the tank with each fill up. He swore it cleaned his engine!

A gallon of diesel fuel added to a "full" tank of gas removes carbon buildup from valves and piston tops.

Prior to a tune up pour a Small bottle of warm water down the carb with the motor revving at about 3000 rpm, will clean off deposits on the valves (but don't let it stall). Lots of black crud out the tailpipes, then change the plugs. I have done this very noticeable improvement in performance

Mix Bon Ami powder cleanser with water and pour down the carb while at full throttle to seat the rings on SBC's that burn oil.

The eggs work!!!!!  I had a hole in my rad on a Sunday night when I dropped a buddy off.  I was an hour away from home, and we put 2 eggs in the rad.... first time I had ever heard of this.  Drove for about 10 min, then pulled over to check, the leak had stopped and it never affected the cooling of the car at all!!!!!  I think I drove for a month before I got it fixed......

Panty hose in place of a broken fan belt.
Didn't last more than 10 feet! And she wasn't too happy as they hadn't even run yet.

Keep your battery on a piece of wood, not in direct contact with the concrete floor to prevent it's storage discharge.
I laugh everytime somone tells me that one!

I heard a similar one,,. for rings that won't seat,...

Take tablespoon Bon Ami,...
Slowly "sift" the dry powder into the carb with your thumb while engine is running at 2500 RPM.

The shop I worked at quite a few years ago hired a "helper" one of my co workers had him clean and paint some engine parts. He was told prior to painting he had to shake the can until the ball stops rattling to make sure the paint was mixed properly......He fell for it. no

A tea spoon of brake fluid into the powersteering to soften up the seals to fix a leak. I have done this on three different vehicles and works well. The first one was a chevy 1/2 ton. The fluid was running out so had nothing to lose. Stopped it completely. I even used it on a car with rack and pinion steering. The rack was leaking. Drove the car for another year and never had a leak!!!
