ok.i put the 250 c;i in the 62 acadian s/w ( i cooked the 194) the baby starts up runs smooth for about 2min. slowly dies out and when i try to restart it the thing pops, back fires up through the carb. leave it for a while and it will start right back up smooth then the same old shi*..whats up!!!i checked the firing order.the only up grade was the pertronics ignitor..ran a full 12 volts to the matching coil..
this is a long shot, did you do anything to the valve train and lifters? almost sounds like the lifters are pumping up and holding a valve open? then they bleed off after it sits.
how's the fuel? If the car was sitting for a period of time, the tank might have some rust scaling? try it off a Jerry can.
????? ??????

Have you checked if the carb is emptying? One thing to try would be a few pumps on the accelerator, looking down the carb, as soon as it dies. That would help narrow down if it's fuel related maybe.

thanks for your reply..didn`t touch the valve train..the car ran fine lastyear, plus i put in a new tank and unit..i`ll still try a jerry can..running out of idea`s.thanks

thanks carl..i`ll check that out..i was also thinking that the exhaust manifold heat risor was stuck closed but when it was running i put my hand under the tailpipe seems to be flowing through..
Sure sounds like fuel or fuel filter. I had something the same happen with a car I bought and trailered home. It would run for awhile then stop. Put in new fuel pump, new filters, carb kit, still the same. Finally pulled fuel tank off, took out fuel gauge and looked in tank. There looking back at me was a piece of plastic. Must have came from a jerry can at one time. It would work its way over and plug the end of the fuel line. Pulled it out of there and never another minutes trouble. Picked up a few gray hairs from that one.
tried the can lastnight, still the same so i know it`s not gas related. the part i just don`t get the car runs fine like it should no missing, back firing, pops....then restart after it dies out back firing out of the carb like it`s ignition related...but why not when i first start it up
Perhaps if you loosen the dist hold down. That was you can move the distributor when it starts acting up to see if it clears up. Could be your pertronix module is bad. Can you put the points back in to try?

hey there, how about if it runs fine for about 2 mins, seems to be float not allowing more fuel into the bowl? Or is the choke not cutting out? I think if it starts and runs, that should rule out most electrical. Also, is there a low oil pressure switch that could be cutting in? These first start gremlins can be really frustrating, been there a couple of times, as most of these other members as well. Sometimes swearing lots and rapid pacing about helps..lmao.
If it's still squirting fuel in when you pump the accelerator even as it dies, it should rule out sticking float and other fuel related problems shouldn't it?
Any chance the exhaust is blocked?
When it restarts does it start really rich? Or do you have to pump it alot while it's cranking?
When it dies, does it just cut out or does it seem like it's choking out? If it dies like it's being choked, I'd suspect fuel, air, exhaust. If it cuts out suddenly, I'd start with the electrical.
Sure sounds like a problem I had years ago on my 53 chevy, when I put in the v8 and forgot to put in the ballest resistor.Coil was getting 12 volts instead of the required 9v. Would run for awile untile the coil overheated and then would start back fireing. Once it cooled down it would start again. You said you put 12 volts to the coil. Are you sure thats required ? Or should be run threw a resistor wire or ballast resistor. Pertronics should have a trouble shooting tech phone number on there site.
Good call Beaumont 4008. I had a Pertonics distributor in my car (changed to an HEI when I did the engine swap). When I installed the HEI, I seem to recall that I had to run a new power wire - bypassing the resistor.
well.......it was the coil i guess when it heated up it would acked up..i changed her up and it ran like a chevy motor should... something as simple as a coil..thanks for all your input to solve this problem that was driving me nuts.. here is a picture before it was painted,,i have some pictures of the car painted that i`ll post soon
