Oh, the joy of living in town/city. I lived in town for 20 years and was blessed with great neighbours but having to be careful using air tools and things that were noisy just sucked. As much as you are smiling inside when he talks to you I guess you can't get to smart alecky with him or he will make your life miserable by the sound of it.

As you know I live in the city-usually do some stuff to cars and they come and go-the neighbour across the street is getting a little worn on it ( I know it) . Fast forward- I'm moving to the country my house was listed for sale (wrecked 06 mustang in the driveway covered) the potential buyer calls after touring my place-he asks "the neighbour across the street has a house trailer-where does it go for the summer ?" I say random day trips sometimes a week or so, mostly just the winter 6 weeks in Florida really nice retired people you'll enjoy them as neighbours-the guy says thanks he doesn't want to look at the trailer all summer ! I have lived here 12 years and never ever thought about it until someone didn't want to buy my house because of it ! here I thought I was the offending neighbour all this time !

I lived in another small town about 10 years ago. The next door neighbors house was for sale. He had an open house. I was outside doing something under the hood of my car. He was mad as hell when he came home as he felt me having the hood up on my car gave the wrong impression.. So far my neighbors here have been good. I don't do anything noisy if my next door neighbors are outside. My garage is at the rear of my property and backs onto a park so there aren't a lot of neighbors to bother. Still, my wife and I have decided to sell the house and move to the country once her parents are gone. She wants more animals, I want more cars!

When I first got your car running after its long sleep-it was about 9:30 on a summer night-the next door neighbour told me the next day not to do that again-it filled his house with smoke !

with peace in mind-I said sorry it won't happen again

1.) close your windows if you don't want to smell it

2.) use your air conditioning

3.) we live in glass houses - don't throw stones

a little off the topic,  but following along , here is a day in my neigbourhood...

I'm a gear head,, no question there... after a the cam change , I was found breaking in the cam at 1:45 am outside my shop,  454 with big tube headers and race mufflers is a sweet sound ...to me !
neighbor 'BIGSTEVE' wondered over shaking his head , we live on 1 acre lots!

across the street , they have built and race a CASCAR circle car. so no worries there. They tune the car until 11 PM sometimes ( sounds great ! )

Steve and I call it SPEED STREET !

the house on my northside ,, those people are 'normal', they moved in last fall.

When the house was 4 sale, If I seen someone looking at it and wondering around the yard, I would open my garage door, pull my 33 big block coupe out and 'warm' it up. !  Now, I wasn't trying to be ignorant , I really liked the people trying to sell, BUT I WANTED THE NEW OWNERS to know up front that that was what it was going to be like living next door ,,, NO BS !!!!

turns out the new owner was a car guy in his teens , been away from the hobby , but totally digs cars !

you just never know about the neighbors !!

some of you are maybe thankful I'm not yours...LOL!!

( just to the right of the Beaumont are the neighbors ..HEHE )

luckily i have great neigbors and they have never complained about noise, in fact, whenever i pull the car out there always outside waiting for me to pull it out, hes the one that gave it the name Stella, and i even tattoo'd that on the licence plate on my arm tat. We have a nice little community here and we all hang out and help eachother out, just like it was when i was growing up. I do keep the noise down most of the time but we are doing renovations all the time and they understand that, plus im the neiborhood fix it guy with all the tools so they are all nice to me!! LOL!!

My street likes it quiet on sundays. They consider it gods day. I told them they don't have to do anything, I do what i want. if it makes noise, too bad. I try to stay quiet for the most part, but almost snaped on the old guy next door when we 1st moved in(sold his house last week! yeaa!!) Came across when our moving truck showed up and told me I can't cut my grass on Sunday, as it's gods day!! It's like a cult out here. Nuts if you ask me. Try to accomidate them if I can, but I pay my taxes as well, if you don't like the sound of the mower, shut the Dang window, or cut my grass for me while I'm at work during the week. Neighbours can be a pain in the a@#, even in the country on 2 acre lots.

Interesting! Not all Christians are like that, so make sure you don't lump us all in the same group!

I don't work Sundays because I believe God wants me to rest. However, with that said, I will NOT judge/condem you for working on your car, mowing your lawn or whatever you do on Sunday.

I know a guy who takes it so extreme that he tries not to travel on Sunday because he may make someone work, i.e. a waitress, gas station attendand or whoever he encounters that may have to help him.

Some days I would love to work on my car but if I did my kids would never see me!!!

Nope, I don't judge an entire group of people. Just thought it interesting enough to share. I try to spend my sundays tipping a few. If anyone is ever in the neighbourhood let me know, as the suds are always cold!biggrin

Nothing like an engine swap finishing up at 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning; rolling it out of the garage
into the driveway and firing the mother up with only the exhaust manifolds and no exhaust! I have the liberty of doing that out where I live in the country. Although I have a neighbour right next door, they are never home on any weekends winter or summer as their daughter is heavily into hockey and baseball, thus they are at tournaments all the time. It's fabulous! Just last night I finished cutting up my acre of grass at 10:25 p.m. The only drawback that I can see with that is the way the bugs just love to come and play in the headlights! LOL!

Nope, wrong side of me. Needs alot of work that one. The one with the big detatched shop on the other side of me.( I see a pattern here... Hmmm....) The one you were thinking of is 2 doors down the other way.

I reluctantly share this storey-but appreciate input.

I sold my house last friday (25th)-I had emptied everything except matresses on thursday-I left the house friday morning at 9 am I did return once around 2 pm to pick up the 63 chev from the side of the road-the new owners had already taken posession, I revisited it on sunday morning after church to give the new owners some mail and check in with him, he seemed a little put off with things I'd left behind. He had told me wednesday on final inspection that he would be doing renovations and wasn't concerned about what I would leave-I left some unwanted items, some garbage (recycle), spare paint (touch up for the rooms), spare floor remenants, manuals, receipts, fireplace tools, firewood, kindling wood, wood trim (moldings, 1/4 rounds etc...) He then told me the neighbour accused him of dumping something to kill his grass and wondered what he was like---this being the same neighbour that didn't like Todd's car starting at 9:30 pm. I told him he was OK but be patient he can be testy-the others are all good.

Then theres the neighbour in the driveway yelling what the f*** did you dump on my grass ? to me ! so I tell him nothing-he goes on to say that I deliberately dumped something there-then treatens that he knows where I live and that he'll come and dump something at my place ! he yells and swears that I kept him up at night etc... so I had enough and wrongly swore back telling him he was no saint and that other neighbours complained to me about his wife's son having a loud party and speeding regularly on the street-I said I never complained once-it never bothered me-I forgot to mention how many times I caught his dog for him and kept it in my yard until he got home from work ! I forgot to mention the poor drainage that spilled half way to the end of the my driveway that eventually caused the driveway to rut and need repair etc.... He tells me his kid was a police issue so I should have called them so I told him to call them for the dead grass ! he runs to my car and yells at my wife with my kids in it ! I finish with the new owner and plan to return that night to pick up unwanted items.  that night it rained heavy but a friend and I made a truck load-the new owner's partner complained of the water pressure.

The ex neighbour called the police about the grass who refered him to city hall-he then called the Ontario ministry of enviroment, he spoke with the real estate agent too, she called me wanting me to have it fixed-my lawyer and my insurance company told me to do nothing-it wasn't my house and to have him prove it was done while I owned it. The MOE is now on it and inspected it they are holding both myself and the new owner responsible for the prompt clean up and disposal of the soil-there is a dead piece of grass 3 x 3. The MOE has told me accidently that even after it would be cleaned up I could still be open for a civil suit. They told me they think its some sort of petroleum base and will test it with results in a week or so-then it will have to be tested for strength and disposal. She said it stunk real bad today and she had a headache from taking samples ! I'm not sure how petroleum could still be strong smelling since sunday or longer even after heavy rains---is there a chance someone is adding to it to keep it an issue ?

I think I'll try dropping it at my insurance company-if something was spilled on my property that leaked to the neighbouring property during my ownership it should be covered ? if I pay with the new owner to dig it up and dispose of it then get sued too this could be a real money pit-

any ideas ?

I guess it's too late now but 3x3 of grass would be three sods about $6. That's a lot cheaper than any lawsuit, even if you didn't do it.

Well Ken these are always tough and usually there never is a winner.  I sort of looked at it from your neighbours view and would think that if you were able to rectify it I would be very surprised if he sued you.  I just find as I get older this world is such a small place and being in business if I eat  a couple hundred dollars here and there it's the best advertising I can do even though many times it's not warranted.  I think with your situation the cost would be mostly your time as a couple wheel barrows of soil and some turf wouldn't be too costly.  Usually it's just the principle that irks a guy because it may well not even be your fault.  But for how you feel down the road and being able to hold your head up high in that you went above and beyond it's sometimes worth even more of what this would cost.  I'd be leaning towards digging it out and replacing the turf but it's tough with me sitting here and you knowing the feelings of the people involved.  Anyhow good luck and hopefully it all works out smoothly.

For one.....How do they (MOE ) know it came from your yard? Your guilty and have to prove you didnn't do it confuseconfuse
Gas will kill a lawn in a few minutes. He probably split gas filling his lawnmower.
Either turn the other cheek and replace the soil and grass or go by one night and pour some gas around the same spot.

Great wisdom Jmont.

Wait for the MOE results. If hydrocarbons are present and they say replace the soil/sod, I'd just do it (you might actually have to get an Environmental Service to do the clean up/disposal, since the MOE is involved). It may cost hundreds.
I also wouldn't, if possible, go back to your old house after you finish ... stay away. Screw your old neighbour. Enjoy your new house.
