I have been a big Canadian Pontiac fan for a long time, but I just found this forum! I have a '66 Strato Chief 2 door post, 63000 miles and original paint. Don't get me wrong, it's a project but its pretty solid all things considered. A guy in the town I grew up in had an original black '66 Strato that was rediculously low with fender skirts and steelies and I thought it was the coolest thing ever back in the late '80s / early '90's. The weird thing is I saw the car that I own now parked outside a book store in 1993, I talked to the guy that had it then and it had 37000 miles on it, and it was "Not for sale"! Weird how these things work out. Glad I found some fellow Canadian Poncho fans.
Well I have had a few '66's over the years. I drove a Tremclad black '66 Laurentian 2 door post for a few years in the late '90's. It was an original Butternut yellow with a red interior car, 283/glide with a 12 bolt, reverberator (?) for the AM radio, vacuum release for the trunk car. I also owned a '66 Parisienne station wagon with a 327/ 4 speed set up in it. I honestly don't know if it was a factory 3 or 4 speed car, but it had a 4 speed when I got it, even had tilt, a 12 bolt posi, and the factory tach in it. Sadly it was so rusted that it almost broke in half when I got it towed out of the back yard I found it in. but what do you want for $150?
My current '66, not a flattering pic but this is what it looked like the second time I bought it. I actually bought the same car a year or so before from some guy that said he was "working on getting the registration" for it. So I got it towed to my storage yard, and waited. A tow truck driver recognized the car a few months later and called the cops, turned out it was the victim of some guy that had swindled it off someone else. So the cops seized it and I was out the cash I paid for it, the towing to storage, and the storage itself. Ironically, like a year later, the car showed up for sale by the actual owner, so of course I had to buy it (again). How could I not buy the same car twice?? It's a 283 / 3 in the tree car.
427Carl - man I have all those old pics of your car on my pc, it was super cool!
Here is a pic from 1992 ish of the black '66 I really liked. My friend had bought it in the '80's, and it had been a low car since he got it.
Here's me helping him pull the tired 305 out of it in 2004. It had been sitting for about 6 years at this point. I just saw him last week and he wanted to know if I wanted to buy it. Kinda hard to say no, I have a full plate already! But seeing as I have wanted it since I was 14, I guess I will end up owning it.
And since y'all like pics, here's a '66 Laurentian I drove out to Calgary to see about 5 or 6 years ago. The guy said it was "90% restored" on the phone. Man, I don't know what color the sky is in his world, but needless to say I wasn't impressed when I got there after a 9 hour drive. The same car ended up on the Ed's Project Cars website a few weeks later.
The white one is 99% there - all the stuff missing in the pics was stacked in the trunk or in the car, and most of it was labelled in bags. I got the seats recovered, the door panels are intact as is the dash and the headliner. The rear bumper is junk, I am missing the reverse lights, and the fender "edging" for the drivers front fender is gone. I don't know what that piece is called, it's not the actual potmetal/chrome that goes around the lights, it's the body coloured piece that goes on the forward edge of the fender, around where the lights go - clear as mud??
