Old, old CCM bike...

The Lounge is for "Clean off topic posts..."  Well this one certainly seems to fit the parameters:
Going throught the folks stuff we have come across a very nice old CCM bicycle.  How old?  Old enough that it has wooden rims.  Tried to get ahold of CCM to see if they might be interested.  Seems they don't exist anymore other than the name being sold to Cdn Tire to use on imported bikes?  They sold the Skate department to Bauer?
I'm guessing EBay may be a way to go, or possibly a museum.  Any other suggestions?
Thx

I think there are some pretty hard core bicycle collectors out there. Have you done a search to see if you can connect with any? Be a shame to list on eBay and not catch the attention of some people who would really appreciate soemthing like that.

Really? Wooden wheels??? Pictures?

yup

CCM, formerly an initialism for Canada Cycle & Motor Co. Ltd., is a sporting goods brand. The brand is held by two separate entities both maintaining the CCM trademark, one (The Hockey Company, now a subsidiary of Reebok) manufacturing ice hockey equipment and the other (CCM (cycle)) manufacturing bicycles.

History

CCM was founded in 1899 after the collapse of the bicycle market. Established "when the operations of four major Canadian bicycle manufacturers amalgamated: H. A. Lozier, Massey-Harris, Goold, and Welland Vale Manufacturing." [1] CCM produced bicycles for many years in the area of Weston, Toronto, Ontario. They also briefly produced an automobile, the Russell.

By 1905, with saturation in the bicycle market, CCM also began producing hockey skates and subsequently began manufacturing other hockey gear.

In 1937, CCM acquired the Tackaberry brand made by a Manitoban named George Tackaberry and "Tacks" have been the company's signature skate until late 2006, when the Tacks line was replaced with the "Vector" line, and now the "U+".

In 1998, The Hockey Company (CCM's parent company) acquired Montreal-based Sports Holdings, Inc. adding the following brands to it stable: Koho, Titan, Jofa, Canadien, and Heaton. Titan and Canadien were well known brands of wooden hockey sticks in the 80's and 90's. Wayne Gretzky famously used the Titan 4020 while playing with the Edmonton Oilers. Heaton was known for its goalie equipment.

In June 2004, The Hockey Company was bought by Reebok. All brands other than the CCM brand were retired, and Reebok introduced its own Reebok Hockey gear.

Russell Motor Car Company

The Russell Motor Car Company was an automobile manufacturer in Toronto, Canada that produced cars from 1904 to 1916. The company is considered to have produced Canada's first successful automobile.[1]

In 1903, weakness in the bicycle market prompted Canada Cycle and Motor Co. (CCM), a bicycle manufacturer, to acquire the assets of Canadian Motors Ltd., a failed automobile producer. Thomas (Tommy) Alexander Russell, CCM's new general manager, saw an opportunity to diversify his company's product line.[2]

From 1903 to 1905, CCM's new automobile division, named Russell Motor Car Company with Russell serving as president, began production of electric-powered two-passenger runabouts. In 1905, the company produced its first "Model A" car with a two-cylinder gasoline engine. A larger "Model B", and a four-cylinder "Model C", arrived in 1906. A 40 horsepower touring car was introduced in 1907, with a more prestigious 50 horsepower model coming in 1908.[2]

The Russell vehicles developed a reputation as well-built and engineered cars, and success allowed Russell to focus on the high-end market. Sales offices were opened in England, Australia and New Zealand. In Canada, Russell promoted its vehicles as "The Thoroughly Canadian Car," built with Canadian material, labour and capital. Marketing included publicity stunts such as races on frozen Lake Ontario between Russell cars and ice-yachts.[2] The Russell Motor Car Company Limited was incorporated separately from CCM in 1911.[3]

The company began to experience difficulties with its sleeve valve engines in 1913. A downturn in the high-end market, coupled with the commencement of the First World War in 1914, resulted in Russell selling its automobile production business to the American manufacturer Willys-Overland Motors in 1916.[2] Russell produced munitions during the war, and manufactured automobile parts after the war ended. In 1938, the company changed its name to Russell Industries Limited, as it continued its shift away from the automobile industry, expanding into the manufacture of machine parts.[3]

Man, you guys are goooooood. Very interesting info, thanks for that. (Ooops, my bad re Bauer.) I guess if we didn't have cars, we'd be talking about Canadian made bikes on this forum! It was actually the photo from the Tim Allen post that motivated this post.
I'll try to get a picture this weekend.
thx

COOL!!!
I've got the vintage bike sickness too and have had lots of old bikes pass through my hands...tricycles too!.
There's groups and a market for everything and although still surprisingly cheap for most models, the 'chosen few' go for skyrocket amounts!.

My favourite ever was an original Whizzer bike I sold about 15 years ago but I like the streamlined styles best w/ tank or fender-bobs and still have a 40's Columbia Tank-Horn bike also a few others...and trikes too!.

I've recently found a SkyKing trike similar to the one pictured below and regardless of the resulting 'woman wrath' I'm facing am gonna' try and buy it!.
Considering what they're worth, it's hard to believe it could be an original but it looks too old to be a repop so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!.

Good luck w/ the wooden rimmed CCM Geoff!
I had to toss a few old CCM's a few years ago but saved their cool chainguards...if they're the same and you need one, let me know!.

I'll keep that in mind Ken.  (It might be a little while though as there are a total of four siblings involved which means all decisions take a little longer.)  In the meantime, I'll try to get a couple of pictures of the old gal.

If they want to keep it in the family-that would be a wise decision.

If your looking for an honest opinion of value-I'm sure Howard Barclay in St. Catharines or Bernie Fretshaw in Jordan , Ontario would be good guys to talk to.

you could check Hemmings too-I've seen odd old bikes in there too

Ken

This older gent had this bike hanging upside down on the wall of his garage.  I had gone there to look at a 60 Parisienne he had for sale.  Said he owned the bike since the 60's and his son was gonna keep it. I didn't buy the car or the bike..  Thought it was neat old bike though.
I took the pic with my camera upside down, so it would look right(sort of)

I like it-men's bikes seem to be more collectable than ladies bikes though

Yeah, and some are more stylish than others. It turns out I was incorrect with my era. It turns out that it's from the 20's. No picture yet, but hopefully tomorrow. It is a pretty plain looking bike other than the wooden wheels.

Also found an old Rudge Whitworth bicycle which is kind of interesting as they also made motor cycles. I'm guessing it's from the 40's.

Here are a few shots of the 1920's green ladies CCM (with the wood rims) and the blue 1930's ladies Rudge Whitworth (complete with signage that we found, possibly from a show or parade?)...

Wow!! Thanks for the pictures. I've never seen a bike with wooden wheels. They look to be in terrific shape!

The rudge looks like it must have been a pretty serious bike. Is it a single speed or does it have a 3 speed axle? I am asking because of the front brake.

My father used to talk about his Raleigh 3 speed race bike from the mid-late 40's. He used to deliver telegrams in Calgary on it. Delivered them as far as Banff!

I'm sure there are still plenty of guys/gals around for whom these bikes would bring back some great memories!

Single gear from what I recall, and a single brake.
Re your father and his Raleigh, my father and his twin used to bicycle race in the Edmonton area back in the '40's.  They also had a tandem racing bike that they had shipped over from England.  Their two Raleighs are now with the Reynolds museum.  (There was at least one race in Edm in which they placed first and second.)
Another fella who was a legend in the area was Jim Purdey (sp?) who would kick everyones butt.  He was also a speed skater.  Unbelievably powerful legs.  He would actually strech the odd chain in his day.  I believe he had a heart attack while out skating.
Dad also used to talk about Torchy Peden.  If you've never heard of him, he's worth a Google.
Is your father still alive?
