A U.S. man who spent 25 years on death row was executed early Friday by firing squad, the Utah Department of Corrections says.
Ronnie Lee Gardner, 49, was the first person to be executed by firing squad in 14 years in the United States.
Gardner was convicted in 1985 for murdering attorney Michael Buddell during a failed attempt to escape from a courthouse, where he was facing another murder charge.
The execution came after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Gardner's final appeal.
Utah Gov. Gary Herbert also rejected a request to temporarily stay the execution, saying in a statement that Gardner had a "full and fair opportunity to have his case considered by numerous tribunals."
"I just gave the go-ahead to corrections director to proceed with Gardner's execution. May God grant him the mercy he denied his victims," Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff said in a message posted on Twitter ahead of the execution.
He was pronounced dead at 12:17 a.m. local time, officials said.
think Canada could learn from this & quit pussy footin around with these bleeding hearts that say you can rehabillitate these 2 or 3 time criminals. I'm sorry but but give these people what they deserve & not let us pay for the rest of our lives for these "scum bags"

Well said! And bullets are so cheap! The first group of offenders that need to be dealt with this way are the child molesters. I got ZERO tolerance for those sickos! But should it be before or after a trial?
The best thing to do is leave their hands cuffed behind their backs and put them in a room full of the family members of the victims! Everyone knows that in Canada, the bloody criminals have more rights than the victims! It's sickening to say the least! It was nice however to see that parliament quickly rammed through what was needed so that that derelict wench Homolka won't stand a chance of getting a pardon anytime soon. The sad part was, SHE was NEVER charged with sex crimes so there is still a CHANCE that down the road, she may still get one after all. Now THAT'S PATHETIC!!
Oklahoma also has the firing squad available. We no longer have hanging even for treason, piracy with violence and arson in Her Majesty's Dockyard, which survived after the moratorium on hanging in 1965.

I totally agree with you Carl. Why keep them alive for 25 years at taxpayers expense when the culprit was caught in the act. In this case, how can you dispute he did not do it when he did it in a court room. Even if he was criminally insane, the same ending should be the outcome.
If everybody on here agrees that capital punishment is needed back in this country I wonder how the population as a hole would vote.We should demand that the polititions put it to the people to decide after all THEY work for us....
I always thought my political views were right wing until I started posting on here. My general feeling is that the average political view on here is somewhere right of Attila the Hun. I don't think the views on here represent the country as a whole. Remember that Montreal and Toronto are always voting Liberal or even further left and that represents a significant percentage of the population. In fact if it were not for these two big cities we'd have a Majority Conservative goverenment right now. I can't see this country implementing Capital Punishment ever again.

I agree with capital punishment BUT the evidence has to be 100% (eg: the crime caught on camera, DNA match etc). There's nothing worse than having an innocent person put to death for a crime they didn't commit.
Any of you remember charles ng? My dad worked that case . Took years to get him back from Canada because the U.S. wanted to execute him. Little good it did 25 years later still on death row Fat and old. Thats California It's cruel to inject a baby killer.
The US states that still execute have it exactly right and are lucky to have this as seeing a case such as this example followed through to the end are definately a deterrent!!!
If proof positive of guilty to murder, swing the bastards!. Sex crimes especially any involving children should be rewarded by offing their pricks also let them feel the love of a broom handle up the hoop for a week while being hung by the bag at half-mast from the town flagpole so the community can see how this type of behaviour is rewarded!. If they live through that, swing 'em in a much advertised public display ceremony at the end of the week!.
Charles Ng should've been dealt with years ago using the above flagpole method...same w/ Cliff Olsen, Bob Pickton and any more of these bastards who instead have been rewarded w/ three squares and the life of leisure they enjoy today!.
Next time I'll say how I really feel!.
