Have been putting off getting an appraisal for too long and thought in case the old girl gets hit or stolen I should have a value for it to fight over. What have you guys been paying?
'64 Parisienne CS "barn find" - last on the road in '86 ... Owner Protection Plan booklet, original paint, original near-mint aqua interior, original aqua GM floor mats, original 283, factory posi, and original rust.
I think we have a very qualified appraiser on board here in 67BBSD. He should be able to tell you all the ins and outs of finding one and what it will/should cost.

First guy I called today was $250 and I thought that might be a little steep. He had left his card at one of the shows. He said it takes him 45 minutes and then he does some research after at home, that must be to justify the cost. Will check out one more here when I can.
I think the cost of an appraisal varies by province as does the type of insurance coverage. Having it appraised doesn't ensure you'll get full value in event of a total loss. Without a non depreciating clause in your policy they would claim it had depreciated since the appraisal just like they do with a modern car. It Ontario the non depreciating clause is call 19A. It should be a part of all old car policies.
Remember also that the insurance company may take your money and only challenge the appraised value if you submit a claim. The person performing the appraisal has to be available to act as an expert to defend there value and your claim amount. Here in Ontario there are no standards or recognized governing body for insurance appraisers and no code of conduct. Anyone can claim to be an appraiser.
Sometimes best to have your insurance agent suggest someone they have worked with who is reliable and trustworthy.
As with most things you get what you pay for. I've paid anywhere from $75 to $175. The highest cost was the most detailed.
years ago I had the wifes 77 Vett appraised. The guy walked up to the car and set his books on the hood of a brand new paint job. Thant was the end of the appraisal.

I had to get both my '61 GMC and '85 Chev Caprice appraised when I bought them. The one guy that did the '61 said a case of beer was good enough for him and the guy that did the '85 said $20 but I gave him $50.00 anyways. Now, about 15 years ago, a buddy of mine; his wife, got his '66 Chevelle appraised for his birthday. The guy valued the car at $13,500.00 and lifted $350.00 outta her pocket!! I've been told by a local appraiser in St. Ratford, who does this for a living; that when it's a show car worth a lot of money, his appraisal is higher. If it's a numbers matching car and he has to check it all out to verify it, then it can be "astronomical" were HIS words not mine. So I guess it can be anywhere from one end of the spectrum to the other depending on the vehicle and of course, the appraiser himself. And also, what a person is WILLING to shell out.
don't get me started on appraisals/appraisers. In the Calgary area, appraisers have climbed to the $300 range (plus mileage), and each appraiser is more of a quack then the previous one. Fortunately, a local broker has started selling Hagerty Insurance, where appraisals are not required.

There is a self appointed appraiser, close to here, who owns a GM dealership.. For $350.00 he asks you what you think its worth, and write it for double... weird
Ask your insurance broker who they suggest. Having a "known" appraiser will help big if you ever do have a claim. If you are using Lant ( Silver Wheels) just give them a call or email. Here in the London area most use Brad Burns at Special Intrest Vehicle Appraisals in Komoka. In the event of a claim you sure wouldn't want your appraisers credibility questioned. I have also heard you have to be very cautious with Haggerty in regards to the fine print. Make sure it is on agreed replacement value.
A while back I saw an ad on eBay for a 65 Custom Sport in Calgary. The description didn't match the pics. I emailed the guy for the data plate numbers. I told him it was a Parisienne but not a Custom Sport. He called me a liar based on an appraisal he had in hand. I sent him a copy of the page out of the parts book to support my statement. He indirectly apologized and was off to confront the appraiser who had valued his car as a Custom Sport.
I use Paul Malec who lives in Stratford. He is a good guy and also a member of P.A.V.E (Professional Association of Vehicle Evaluators). Ken is also a member.
