Tried to kill the wife today...

Yesterday I did the front brakes on my 05 Oddysey. Rotors and pads, I very carefully fitted the wheels back on, ensuring that the wheel centered on the hub correctly. Very carefully and gradually brought the wheel lugs snug in a pattern. Torqued them to 85 F/lbs.

The wife took the van today to work in Missisauga, on the way back home on the QEW she felt a roughness that she thought might be a low tire or a flat starting. She had the piece of mind to pull off onto Trafalger Rd. Called me at the same time, on checking she found the 3 of the wheel lugs on the drivers side finger loose. She took the wheel wrench and snugged them all back up.

I'm lucky (or she is) that she had the sense to stop.

Here's the thing, two years ago the same thing happend on the same wheel.

What am I doing wrong that this happens? Are these wheels prone to this? I undestand that it's good practice to check the lugs a second time, but I've never had a wheel come loose...except for two years ago. no

It's wise to retorque aluminum wheels after a brief road test. Is 84 ft/lbs the factory spec?

Are the lug bolt holes on the wheels out of round from previous mishap?

85 ft/lbs has always seemed a touch low to me for wheelnuts and I usually go with 100ft/lbs because I have had them come loose at 85 ft/lbs. Not really sure if it is wise to over-torque but my wheels don't fall off and I have found that if I put the wheel on WITHOUT airtools or a torque wrench, I usually get well over 85ft/lbs anyhow.
