I think the derby promoters should start to put an age limit on the competing cars so that no more classics get destroyed (my opinion only).  I've always been a fan of these clamshell wagons and I fear that some day they will have all been derbied away!

Could this be an American car. My old '75 Laurentian Wagon had a different grill and was a 400 SBC.

That's just plain sick!!!!!!! Those derby guys really ain't the brightest bunch.. What a waste. Hopefully someone with half a brain will buy the wagon and preserve it and the Lincoln as well.
I bought a totally rust free '65 Crown Imperial 4 door hardtop a few years ago to save it from becoming totalled for cheap thrills. Whatthe dickens is it with people anyways thatthey gettheeir rocks off watching cars being destroyed???? I have just never understodd society's obsession with destruction, mayhem, tradgedy and death.. just my opinion.

I got 'No Problem " with demo derby's as long as they stick to the 4 cyl. econo boxes that are a dime a dozen. Quit destroying these "classics""!!!!!!!!

You know what most of the derby cars are found just sitting there rusting no one saves them better to see them used up in a derby then get crushed! Alot of guys sell the parts, all we use is the shell and fram no clasic drive trains get used. I would love to derby a suicide lincoln, or T bird, any mid 70's GM. Trust me the cars getting wrecked are not worth big money or really rare just old cars!biggrin

Cool Tiny, I was waiting for some wisdom, as I know you are an active Demo driver.

My crack is , VERY few will step up for my 4 DR hardtop. It will unfortunately end it's life with a demo and them the crusher.... heavy duty frame under that hardtop !!

I have done a few derby's in my time as well and the only ones I would use are the ones that are gone waaaay to far to repair. Unless these wagons are too far gone, I would not use them!

I had a mid '70's full size Buick one time and when it got hit on the passenger side to the "A" pillar, the whole pillar let go. That is how bad it was.

I did save a '67 Parisienne 2-dr hard top that the guy was bidding against me on at an auction. It is a parts car now but there are lots of good pieces left on that one, even now!

And with that, only half a brain for a couple of days after the derby!!! confuse (No anger intended, just having fun remembering my experiences!! biggrin )

There's a wrecking yard about an hour south of me in North Dakota. When you pull up, all you see is a section devoted totally to the 70's monster wagons, all GM. He won't sell anything off any of them. They are all destined to be derby cars. I am guessing he likely has about 30-40 of the boats there. Sad to think of how many 455 Pontiac, Buick and Olds engines are sitting there waiting to be tortured.

I always get a chuckle how every one thinks you should use the most rotten piece of crap you can find! it is quite the opposite when you are putting a couple of grand into a derby car you are beyond doing it for fun you are doing it to win! To me it is no different then a guy cutting up a nova or camaro for a drag car or circle track car it is a organized motor sport! at leat we dont cut up big block nova's or camaro's for the 1/4 mile. I didnt make it to billy bash I was just to busy and im having a few medical issues I need to take care of but I will be driving this year just later in the season.
For all you haters of derby cars most of of the derby promoter's only allow 1980 and newer but I guess you dont like to see 4dr crown vics, and caprices get cut up either, I think people should get more educated about the subject before the name calling starts, I wouldn't run dual quads on the street waste of fuel and bad for the enviroment but I dont call you a redneck, etc! sorry about the rant but lets not be so childish.

Sorry, didn't mean to hit a nerve!

Smash 'em if that's what turns your crank.  You're right in that most of 'em will just end up being crushed anyways.

Oh well, they're just metal and plastic, a manufactured item used for transportation.  If they all disappeared someday we'd just find something else to amuse ourselves with. wink

There are not, too many guys, restoring those big hulks!    If there were, they would be saving those wagons..

Good point.  I guess you can't save them all.

I should have thought it through a little more before posting the original ad.  In hindsight I should have worded it so as not to play on the derby side of things.  In reality, it's no worse than an old car sitting out in a field somewhere rotting away - they'll all probably get crushed anyways, so you might as well have some fun with it first.

Like you say, it's not like people are breaking down the door trying to buy it for a restoration.  Likely the only monster '70s wagons that will get saved are the ones that are still mint and original - and nobody would derby one that good anyway.

My apologies if I upset anybody - the car hobby has many different facets - from fixing them to wrecking them and everything in between and we should all be more tolerant and understanding of the part of the hobby that the other guy enjoys, as we are all in this together!

Good Point. 400 sbc was entry level for Canadian Poncho wagons of this era, of course it could be a 400 sbc and since a 350 sbc looks identical he could have erred.

My thoughts on this are, if you buy it and pay for it it's yours to do as you please. Restore, let rot, or derby owners choice. I have seen way more valuable cars than these wagons left to sit and rot, but they were not mine so nothing I can do about it.
I owned a 74 Safari years ago to use as a winter beater then rip the SBC out in the spring so it doesn't bother me at all.

We have these demo guys over here to (Great Brittan), but over here they call it banger racing. They must be the same all over the world, as the ones here activly search for the oldest cars they can find to smash up. Ive heard tails of very early Rolls Royces and Bentleys wreaked, along with other rare cars. I think thre all brainless morons!!! They just cant see what they are doing.....

I like to think of it as thinning the herd. Let's face it if the cars are valuable they won't end up in a derby. Those pic's remind me of when I was a kid. I seen a lot of TRI 5 Chev & Poncho's done in that way, but there is still no shortage of them. Another car is the Imperial's. One of my personal fav's. They are banned from all Derbys now due to indestructible build but many of them met their fate in the ring, wiping out Caddies and Lincolns. But there are still more of them for sale then there is buyers.
Same goes for the big GM wagons.

Great video! So that's where all the late 50's Merc's went. Nice to see stuff that's not rotted out take a hit.

With derby cars all the stuff has to come off of and out of them anyways so that about all yer left with is the motor, frame and shell anyways. Given the rules of the sport for safety, the last thing they want (or the driver either) is having a spare piece of trim or something puncturing a tire or spearing another vehicle or whatever. Even the gas tanks aren't allowed to be left in are they?
So in my opinion, although it IS sad to see what some deem a classic and others deem "just another derby car"; meat their demise, it's true ya just can't save 'em all unfortunately. As has been said here also, it's 1980 and forward now for model years allowed to participate? I'm not in the sport so I have no idea. They might as well go out with a blaze of glory than just be hauled in to be crushed. At least they got a chance ta FIGHT before going for reincarnation! LOL!
